Mk3 Mondeo 2.0 Duratec HE - High fuel consumption

Hi all,

I recently bought a 2.0 Mk3 Mondeo with a Duratec in it. The other day I did the same round trip of ~60 miles twice and it cost me just shy of £40 in petrol!!
The car pulls well and the only noticeable engine issue is a slightly rough idle at times. The revs also 'hunt' rapidly up and down between 900-1000 every now and again, although this has only happened twice so is rather rare.

There is nothing visually wrong, other than the swirl plate actuator arm keeps popping off. Would this make the fuel consumption so high?

Any ideas on possible causes will be greatly appreciated.

PS Can anyone recommend somewhere near me that will be able to read OBDII codes for reasonable money?

Thanks in advance

Rich

Let's see, £40 at £1.25/l makes 32l, which is 7.1gal

7.1gal over 120 miles makes 16.9mpg...

Wow you're right it should be about double that. Were you lead-footed or carrying a load at all?

Maybe a good service (new oil, filters and plugs) will help.

Stick an OBD reader on it and see if there are any error codes. Maybe lambda sensor is fubar, so it's adjusted the mix towards rich?

Thanks for your replies,

In all honesty I was rather heavy footed for the first 1/4 of the journey but after seeing how far the fuel gauge had dropped I was pretty well behaved from then on. Was motorway most of the way which seems to be most economical for me and my driving. Wasn't carrying any load at all. Just me and 1 passenger.

I wondered about lamda sensor and have seen reports of this on other forums too. Will get it on OBD asap. Its costing me a fortune! One of the reasons for buying was that my old mk1 mondeo was struggling to return anything over 30mpg.

temp sensor fault maybe? ecu thinks the engine's cold, so like running with the choke on all the time? don't know if its a different sensor to the temp gauge?

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

Could be a good shout. Suspected that on my old car and replaced it and it did make a good bit of difference. Old car was a Zetec and had seperate sensors for guage and ECU, not sure if Duratec is one or two sensors?

is what you need. Used to be Mondeo only, has now expanded to all Fords
