New car for SWIMBO

'Er indoors has a 6 year old diesel Citroen C3 which she is very pleased with. It's time to replace it but I haven't kept up with production cars for a while, so what's good? High MPG is the top priority and it needs to have no less space than the Citroen. We'll probably go for something about a year old. What do you recommend?

If she likes the C3 then maybe first stop would be to go back to Citroen and see what they suggest in a similar flavour

cant help on make or model but:

after driving some 60 plate hire cars from work, you need to be aware of some features that are appearing in this modern world.

my wife would definitely struggle with not having a handbrake - New astra has a button

hill start assist- foot off brake and it doesn't roll back, again i could see issues.

also, can she see out over the bonnet? --- my wife turned left out of wooley edge services the other day and drove straight into the kerbs designed to stop articulated lorrys and tore front of car off. (i didnt see it?)

similar size------crunch " well the old car used to fit in that gap" etc....

as its going to be new or nearly new, then dealer service is important--

ford dealers----terrible, nearly all of them
Volkswagen------good.

lots of generalizations there !

IC

measure twice, cut once, scrap it, start again.

Toyota Aygo

Whatever you consider remember and check the Euro Ncap, some small asiancars have very poor ratings.

Both of them got me on a test drive, I had to stop quickly and rammed the "handbrake" on (as it was foot operated) and creeping forward in traffic (in a new Espace) worried the salesman somewhat!

If she likes her currect car and it's reliable and economical, I'd say; better the dog you know. Are you changing for changing's sake or is it falling apart.

I'd get at least another year from it.

Why does it need replacing? 6 years is very young isn't it?

SWMBO quite fancies the new Scirocco and I must say it looks like a good candidate to replace her Hyundai Coupe later this year.

isnt the citroen ds meant to be the replacement for the c3? i got the other half a new shape punto when she smashed up the lovely little micra she had. its what she wanted, i was a it concerned that it wouldn't be as reliable as the micra but touch wood its been good as gold and returns 45-50mpg from its little 1.2 petrol engine.

There have been a few things that sound expensive to fix that haven't quite gone wrong with it in the last few months so we've decided to swap it for something newer. The Aygo is a couple of sizes smaler than the C3, and with a baby seat in the back, the front seat needs to be pushed forward a bit more than is comfortable. A C1 just isn't big enough. As for the New C3, it is less than a year old and quite a lot more expensive than the old car. I can't bring myself to spend £14k on a new Citroen. We could buy a newer one of the same model I suppose but it doesn't seem like a brilliant idea somehow.

My other half had a C3 which she change 18 months ago , she now has a new Fiesta 2 door which she hates. She has seen the new C3 and is already thinking of changing back. Have you tried the 16valve C3 diesel?

Lots of road noise which gets on her nerves, the fact that being a 2 door putting the seat belts on causes her problems
( her fault, she road tested a 4 dr and has a shoulder injury and is in and out of the car all day visiting patients) She likes the heated front screen , the gear change , steering etc but doesn't feel the car is as solid as her old one. I'm sure there are more reasons but I've sort of switched off to them

is that one of these brand new ones ? (Mk6)

I'd guess road noise is the type of tyres as much as anything, not that its ever bothered me....
I started off with a 1979 mk1 fiesta and didn't think it was too bad - moved on to an 1992 106 and thought that was quiet!

I had the newest fiesta as a hire car for a week. I had massive back ache within 10 minutes of getting in it every time. I started taking a cushion for lumbar support the seats were that bad. Unless there was a "sport seat" option or similar, I wouldn't buy one.

its the mk5 one I had my eye on (the one before the newest ones)

but then again its maybe just that my standards are lower than some folks - my focus is still a new car to me and its going to be 10 years old in a couple of months

Yes it is a mk 6 but the noise is more down to lack of any sound deadening rather than just road noise, her Citroen was a hell of a lot quieter . Come to think of it I suffer a bit with backache after a trip in it but don't tend to travel very far in it . Will confirm after this week end
