Van (Camper Van) what is the best way to insure and with who?

My brother-in-law has just bought a MWB Iveco van which has been converted to be more of a camper van with part of a caravan interior fitted. It also has been insulated and carpeted throughout etc etc. The question is, how does he insure this to a) comply with insurance regulations and correctly disclose the vehicle b) get the best value for money insurance.

The van is for leisure use (mainly for him to come racing with me) and will not be used for business. He has zero no claims but is mature born in 1962 and has access to his wifes car and a company van.

I called Direct Line and thinking that the premium would be lower for a non commercial van, I proceed to explain that it had been converted to a camper van, I got the please hold the line treatment, he went away and came back and said that they wouldn't insure it as its too heavily modified! I speak to the supervisor, and they don't insure modified vans!

So, who should he be using for this 'highly' specialised vehicle

BTW - I've tried the internet comparison sites and they wanted and annual premium of circa £1200 for a £4k van?????

Try David Auden / rally car insurance. They are really good and understand motorsport!

I have my transit insured with them as a rally service barge.

I insure my bus/camper/toy hauler as a self build motorhome www.insurancechoice.co.uk, £249 for the year, no no claims (not needed on a motorhome) and far better than the £600 to insure it as a commercial!. Give them a call they are really helpful and will advise you on what you need.

Read this. It has a lot of relevant information for what you are trying to do. It has to meet the criteria to be classed as a camper before insurance will look at it.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
