Freelander problems can anyone help my sister in France
had an email from my sister in Strasbourg today. can anyone suggest anything?
We bought a second hand Freelander and it has broken down - prop shaft broken front - ref lTAG000230 I think , so we need to replace this and I
suppose the viscous coupling unit too;
( Dont laugh we bought it one day and it broke down the next). The prevois owners are mortified and are going to help with repair fees.
The garage here says the part will cost 2,300€ - I have found the same price on the site LandRover parts,

Can you give me any other ideas where else to find these parts, as you are always on the lookout for the best deal?? there is no way we can afford

Am i reading this right, the part on its own costs 2,300 euro ??
for a driveshaft ?
If thats the case then i am sooooo glad i dont own a Landrover !!

My dad and I are Bell Engineering, i'll give you as much advice as you want, and can supply parts cheaper than anyone else you can find
Not sure from your description what has happened, if its the IRD/transfer box they are expensive and parts to recon are not cheap either. Give me a
call/email and i'll help you out as a fellow LCB

I thought you could just ditch the prop and troublesome coupling and run front wheel drive on a freelander?

All the french I know buy from Belgium or Germany.

Not suggesting this is the most cost-effective route, but I can see how much I can get a prop for through work with a staff discount (I don't
think we have FL1 parts lying around the place anymore unfortunately). If you can get me the part number for the prop shaft I can find out.

I only have the info that she has sent to me. Probably best for her to tell you what is wrong herself.

(She dosnt really deserve this agro as she has just finished Chemo)

yeah you can just take the prop off and make it 2 wheel drive thats what i did with mine, its the propshaft centrifugal rubber thats expensive. about
1000 pound new to buy.

eeeerrrm no?? If your referring to the vcu, these are a lot cheaper than the IRD and diffs. A failed VCU causes the damage to the IRD and diff, as
does mismatched tyres and running low pressures.
Sometimes removing the prop and running in 2wd drive sorts the problem out temporarily if its the crown wheel thats gone, but all that actually does
is stop the noise. The thrust bearing collapses allowing the crown wheel and piniion to spin over the top of each other, causing the noise, but debris
from the resulting grinding can causes lots more damage that can't be rectified by just removing the prop. Also other parts of the IRD quite
commonly fail which can't be rectified by prop removal.
