Car stereo wiring - now with internal pics
I'm changing my old tape deck in my 740 for a newer volvo cd player. The 740 radio had an amp out DIN connector and the speaker wires come out
of there. The new(er) cd player has the same amp connector so I was going to use that for simplicity.
The bit I don't know how to wire is the power connector. By using my multimeter I've found permanent live and ignition live on the
existing loom. I have the power connector for the new cd player and 6 inches of wire to splice into the old loom, I don't know which colours do
what. I've searched for ages on volvo forums with no luck, I found a similar model stereo but the wiring colours were different. Is there any
way of working out which wires do what? Are some colours universal or is this going to be specific to the model? (SC-805)
Presumably some of them will be things I don't need like back lighting fader etc, I just need perm live, earth, ignition live. Thanks for any
halp!

if its the same plug on it, it *should* be standard... as in, just plug it in that, or any other stereo from any other manufacturer with the same plug
and it all works.
for power, black is normally earth, red live, and yellow is switched (wire it to the ignition so that the radio turns off when the keys turned off)
orange is normally the dimmer, and blue is normally used to switch on a seperate amp.
i'm a bit confused by the number of reds you have lol
i wouldn't want to get it wrong! have you got any photos of any of it?

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

The old connector won't fit, different kind T_T I just need to transfer across perm live, ignition live and earth. Yeah number of reds is
annoying!

if you are confident with electronics, it might be possible to pop the top and trace the components and wires inside. ground is the easiest, and
it's likely that the 12v supply may have an internal fuse, but will almost certainly be on a thick track to the final PA stage etc.

Let me help!
So the main wires you need are actually easy.
Just so you know, the tool you need is called a Power Probe, a Multimeter will work and help but a PP is better.
You said that you have found supply and ignition. So no worries there.
The earth will be thick but not always black. A continuity test with the multimeter between any thick wire and a earth from the door hinge will loose
most of the wires so you should find that. You can test it by trying it first once the stereo is done are quickly arcing it with the known positive
(Supply). THIS WILL NOT DAMAGE ANYTHING. JUST BE QUICK AND CHANGE THE FUSE IF YOU ARE TOO SLOW!!!
You can get illumination wire by turning your lights on and off the same way as you found ignition.
Is that all the wires you need? I have a easy test for speaker tests as well. Cant be ar$ed to type it all out though!!
HTH
U2U me if you have any other problems.

thanks for the pointers, some handy info there
I think I've got it now, as I popped into halfords and they sell an adapter that covers a few older volvos and my connector would fit it,
halfords handily put on the back of the pack what each colour does so I got the info from there ^_^ I'll give it a go tomorrow

Got that one now thanks to your info
Here's the wiring connector from my old radio (i.e. this wiring connector is still connected to the car's loom)
There's two wires that I don't know what they are for still:
1 - WHITE - There is no pin for this on the actual radio so it does nothing
2 - GREEN/RED - Ignition live
3 - ORANGE - Permanent live
4 - YELLOW/WHITE - 12v supply when lights turned on
5 - BLUE - ?
6 - BLACK - Earth
7 - GREEN/WHITE - ?
Here again is the connector that goes into the new CD player.
Here's what's written on the back of the halfords packet:
Main postive power - Red (Lines up with WHITE/RED on cd player connector)
Memory positive backup - Yellow (lines up with RED)
Aerial switched power - Blue (Lines up with RED (thin))
Dial Illumination - Orange (Lines up with YELLOW/WHITE)
Ground - Black (Lines up with BLACK)
What's main postive power and memory posive mean? Is memory permanent live and main positive is ignition live? Is dial illumination the one that
would be rigged up to the wire that gets 12v when the headlights are turned on?

Inside the stereo pics
Power connector circled (other black connector is speakers)
Close ups of the connectors from behind
The block of 7 on the left is for telephone, and I think tweaters.
The block of 7 on the right is BAT, DIM, GND, RHE?, BAT, ACC?, GND So is it needing two earths and perm lives? Is ACC ignition live?
EDIT: sorted, just needed an extra permanent live (still only one earth needed)

Well done, glad you fixed it.
I first thought it would be useless looking at the PCB, but it solved the problems!!
