Tin Top help.
Hello all,
Got a call from the Mrs! Car wont start. Got home to find what appears to be flat battery. Tried jump starter and it does not turn just clicks. Left
it on boost for a while and seems to be taking a charge as it wants to turn but not enough power.
The car is a renault megane 1.9TD on a 2004 (04)
Any one know of any battery problems or common causes? Or could it just be a 7 year old battery which has done 100K+ miles?
I know that its a renault and that alone is a problem but I really dont need her using my car all the time

Did you try jumping it off one of those battery packs, or off a running car?

maybe a battery issue. if you have a decent set of Jump leads and the car didnt charge from the leads being on for a while then i would suggest
battery.
bump the car off after warming the plugs for a bit then bump off and get the battery checked at motosave or somewhere simular.
Hopefully the alternator is fine.

tried of a charger/starter unit. Trouble is its push button start so that doesnt help either. troble is where its parked I cant get my car near it to
use jump leads!

7 year old 100k mile diesel that has just been through 2 very hard winters odds are it will be the battery but --
Check if a battery terminal is getting hot --- this indicates a bad connection if not try a jump lead between the battery negative and a good
earth the engine block /gearbox if it starts this will tell you if main earth lead is knackered.
Put it on charge for a while let the battery rest off charge for a while then check the battery voltage anything over 12.5 volts is OK if over
12.2v you can do a cranking voltage test and measure the voltage when cranking the engine if under 9 volts then the battery has a dead or gassing
cell.
Tanya batteries are a good reliable online supplier Tanya batteries
Most European diesel cars use the type 096 battery look for a battery with at least 4 year warranty I would recommend an Exide or Varta/Bosch
expect to pay about £90 delivered.

If the battery's completely flat as in just enough to fire the Door locks or less our works Kangoo 1.5dci's take a good 10mins with a
heavy set of jump leads to another running van before they even think about starting so I wouldn't loose faith just yet.
Even dragged one down the road for about 1/4 mile with the engine turning over before it'd bump start damned things!
So I'd either swap the battery for one off the working car or leave it to charge for a considerable time.

Right, battery in my audi is in boot, reverse car in, remove all my work stuff from boot.
Add positive to positive jump lead
Earth from good battery to engine on dead battery car.
Push the button = started first time.
Does that mean that bypassing the battery earth, it shows a dead battery?

After 15 minutes running did the car restart normally off it own battery ?
If so it points toward a possible dead cell in the battery.

See if it charges the battery and then if the battery retains charge overnight.
If it doesn't then if could be an alternator failure. My A6 for had an alternator short that flattened the battery.
Quite interesting fault as you can't release the electric handbrake! Oh I hate those things.

after 15+ mins of running switched off, would not start again.
Just put another battery on it and it fired up first time. Think its a case of 7 year old diesel battery with 100k+ miles = dead battery.
Lets wait and see but I know its fine

Try sticking it on the charge overnight (24 hours if possible) and then stick it back on, if it still won't work then yeah dead battery

With a good battery in then you can do a charging voltage test on the alternator, at 2000 rpm it should charge at at least 13.4 volts to a maximum
of 14.9 volts with the headlights and heated rear window on, then repeat with all electrical loads off it should not got above 15 volts.
Note this test only shows if the alternator is charging it won't always show up an alternator with a duff diode leaking current when the engine
is off.
