Ford Galaxy White Smoke

My wifes car has suddenly developed a fault. Oh Ford Galaxy 1.9tdi 115bhp (90k on clock), very good service history. In fact the oil was changed couple weeks ago

Lots of White/Blue smoke from the exhaust when rev'd and at idle.

I can hear a fast metallic spinning noise when its cold, which goes away when you rev it, but then comes the smoke.....

She thinks it down on power. I'm awaiting a VAG-COM reader to come in the post.

But i'm thinking its the turbo i can hear?

Is there any sure fire way of finding out, before i shell out £300 on a new turbo.

Thanks in advance, i'll never hear the end of it if i dont fix it yesterday :|

If it is the turbo the next symptom will be you're unable to switch it off, it will run on the engine oil as it bypasses the seals, which soon fail after the bearing gets noisy.

all symptoms would suggest turbo failure

Sounds very much like the turbo has gasped it's last. Remove the air intake hose and check how much radial play is at the compressor wheel - I'll bet it a lot as the metallic noise will be the compressor scraping on the housing...

im with the above, sounds like the turbo, a tdci mondeo i had a few years ago had the same symptoms and it turned out to be the turbo that was fooked, dont rely on a code reader picking up the fault though, my local ford dealer had the car for 3 weeks and couldnt find a fault, in the end told me to take it away and let it develop.... hence i no longer have a ford !!

Well the galaxy has a Vw engine in it, which is well known for this.

Mike I'll check for play, thanks for that.

I was hoping someone was going to say, oh it might be a hole in the air pipe? But once I heard the noise it's was almost certainly the turbo

Nearly £300 for recon

Also check the wife hasn't put petrol in the tank, that can produce white smoke when mixed with diesel. That's what happened to me when I did it by mistake. Got away with it by brimming tank with diesel.

Had very similar symptoms on my Pajero, metallic rattle and very smoky, convinced it was the turbo but it turned out to be the AGR valve

Just checking, are you sure the smoke is coming from the main exhaust and not the small exhaust from the auxiliary heater under the near side wheel arch?

I had an Alhambra which had a problem with the auxiliary heater and it produced plumes of White smoke when the engine was cold. This is a common problem.

If the smoke is definitely from the main exhaust then disregard my comments but otherwise let me know and I'll give you more details.

Cheers,
Craig.

Hi Craig, I'm aware of aux heater but I don't think it can be with the noise from the bearing

To be honest, I didn't. I was so sure it was the turbo I took it to the local garage, they diagnosed and fixed it.
It made a horrible metallic rattle just like a blown turbo and was very smokey, I'd certainly check it first, one hell of a lot cheaper than a turbo.

TURBO

Compressor wheel not only moves up and down, it also moves in and out

It never showed any signs of trouble before that day. BUGGER
