I have volvo s40 and previously a V70 ( I love volvos also).
Its a good question, someone else drove my car the other night and fiddled with the lights. I was very confused as i couldn't get full beam it
was only then I realised the switch wasn't where i left it. I usually leave it on dipped ALL the time.

position 0 is dipped beam plus parking lights.
headlight position is headlights plus parking lights.
position 0 seems slightly brighter then headlight position on mine? but main beam wont work unless in headlight position. weird!

You need to read the manual, by default the lights are on when you start the car, by playing around with the controls you can turn this trickery off
and it will behave like a normal car
My V40 was like this, now reconfigured so for full lights I need to turn the switch to full lights, previously on position 0 engine on it you could
not switch from dip to main, although could flash the lights.
Make sure you do not leave it with side lights on 100% of the time when keys are out, a possible option !
Volvo's rock !
Regards Mark
