PHOTOS: Louwan Museum (Cars) - Den Haag, Netherlands
So...... I am away working in Rotterdam for 12 days so that means I am here this weekend, with only a little work to do over Saturday and Sunday, so
that means I have some time on my hands.
I did originally think about hiring a bike (motorbike, not a push bike like most over here) for a day or two but decided that the roads just
aren't exciting enough to really want to go riding around for pleasure. The Netherlands is absolutely flat, not a hill in sight, and most roads
are dead straight due to the layout of the land. So no Dutch version of the Peak District, North Yorkshire Moors, Yorkshire Dales, Pennines, where you
can go find some twisties with no speed cameras. So just decided that it would be a bit of a waste of money, and possibly my license as they are keen
on speed cameras here and they arent clearly signposted and painted like in the UK.
So what to do? Well I decided on this museum called Louwman Museum. It is a car museum in Den Haag (The Hague) which is about 35-40km away from where
I am.
It boasts:
"The Louwman Museum houses the world's oldest private collection of automobiles, brought together by two generations of the family
Louwman. The base was established in 1934 and now includes the collection more than two hundred and thirty antique and classic cars. Connoisseurs
consider the collection as one of the finest in the world. The museum exudes passion. Every car tells its own story and thus makes its own
contribution to the history. They are mirrors of the culture. The collection is housed in a specifically for that purpose built museum in The Hague,
the city where PW Louwman an import shelf for Dodge and Chrysler automobiles began. The museum building, designed by the American architect Michael
Graves, is in harmony with the historic surroundings. The surrounding landscape architecture of Louis Baljon is in equilibrium with the building
design."

What a place!! Not only are the cars amazing (and there is an awful lot of them), but the building in which it is all housed is absolutely stunning!!
All the cars are presented in an amazing way, not just all parked up in one big warehouse / hall. And the information they give about each car is in
Dutch and English, so plenty to read too. In addition to the brilliant cars and the beautiful building (2 of my favourite things), there is also a
mountain of car / motorsport artwork on display in certain parts, and thats artwork in every form you can think of; paintings, drawings, bronzes,
sculptures, woodwork.... and they are all just amazing, and original to boot.
Along with the cars there are also a few motorbikes, pushbikes, a couple of planes, and some other oddities too. So here are a few pictures:
Some of the building and gardens
This area was all done out like an old world area with shops and streets, with car related stuff in the windows like driving clothes, clocks and
gauges, spares etc etc:

Or how about this as a contraption. Proper custom car/van with a custom bike that slides out the back on its own ramp:
So the cars:
Check this little Suzuki out. Reckon it would be good with a GSXR-1000 engine lumped in the back:
Or perhaps a super lightweight car? The 5th wheel at the back was driven direct from the engine. You have to lift it off the floor to start it then
slowly put it down on to the floor once its going.
Maybe a very early electric car is what you are after. This one ran off 2 batteries:
Fancy a car with doors that slide in to the front wings:

Here is one of Elvis' old cars. He had quite a few mods done on if you can see them (some of them anyway)
Churchills old motor. This had a custom extra large ashtray in the back, and a push button radio (very special for the time)
One of the Merc Beetle's that Hitler dealt with:
We mentioned FIAT's the other day. Well here is a good example of a FIAT:

What about this for an unusual concept design. Wonder why it never made it to production?
Not the most desirable Ferrari:

I think this has to be one of my favourite cars from the museum:
Bugatti your thing?
First ever know Toyota, found in a barn in Russia. Not even the Toyota museum in Japan has an original one of these:
