SEAT Altea 1.8 T Petrol - Opinions

Have a good friend who is considering buying a SEAT Altea 1.8 T Petrol
(He doesn't do enough miles to warrant running a Diesel)

Has anybody had one of these or had to work on one ?

Good and Bad points please

Have heard a fair few bad things about the nissan squashcai...

Don't know anything about the Altea.. infact I just did a google image search to see what one looks like.... I wish I hadnt...

I'm heavily biased, but the Altea is a decent car for the money. The 1.8 T is used in a gazillion cars and is pretty well proven, in fact it's probably a safer bet than the newer VW engines which are potentially more complicated than they need to be. It's not overly thirsty in it's lower power versions, it's no diesel obviously.

Even though it'll be a Spaniard putting it together, he'd have used parts from all over the VW and Audi range, with matching reliability. Working on them isn't difficult though, there are a few weak points SEAT's are considered the 'sporty' cars of the family, so it'll be a slightly firmer ride than the equivalent VW or Skoda for example.

The only thing I would look for would be a service history of some kind (not necessarily dealer, evidence of home servicing would be enough for me) and I would absolutely insist on a dealer certified cam belt replacement every 40,000 miles.

Check out the ABS/ESP stories as well though, there have been a few bad experiences but in my humble opinion not enough to warrant avoiding the car completely.
