MX5 Battery

Mate of mine just went to get a new battery for his MX5 MK2.5

They told him it was a main dealer only thing because of some vent pipe system?

What are they on about?

Cheers

M

Yep, the battery vents through a tube system out under the boot floor - prevents fumes getting into the pass. cab. via the boot and corrosion of the battery tray which in the mx5 is the boot floor. You can get batteries from mx5 parts and a few other mx5 specialists as well as the dealer.
You could use a normal battery but you invariably get some spillage and both the boot floor and the carpet rot out pretty quick. I had to put a new boot floor in one I had 'cos the previous owner was a cheapskate

What about just using a sealed battery ?
The Red Top one advertised on here recently would be ideal.

Because the battery is in the boot it vents gas via a pipe to the outside. Sealed batteries still vent gas; They just can't be topped up.

Most quality batteries have 2 small vent holes in the ends (just below the top) and you use the one at the right end for your car. They usually have a plug molded into the terminal cover to pull off and pop in the other hole. Some have the elbow for the pipe as well (Yuasa do) otherwise you have to reuse the old one (often easier anyway to reuse).

Most quality semi-sealed batteries vent via a little vent holes at the end - I don't know the diameter but it is about 6 to 8mm.

No gas or acid should come out unless the battery is getting over charged because of a U/S alternator regulator.

Having had to replace a rotted out offside boot floor due to acid spillage from a 'normal' sealed battery I can vouch that the extra £20 or so for the proper battery is definitely worth it, given that the genuine batteries seem to last for ages I wouldn't think twice about paying £80 for the right battery. Just my two peneth!
