Ford Ranger - anybody got one?

Hi All

I'm on the verge of buying a new vehicle and considering either the Mitsubishi L200 or the new Ford Ranger. I've driven both and the Ranger seems a much more car-like drive.

The test drives were quite short so I was just wondering if anybody has any views?

I need a towing work horse that can double up as the family car to go to Europe in.

Ta

Wyn

All the fleet at work was replaced with Ford Rangers about a year ago. Ours has been very good. No problems at all. I did a 3hr trip in one and I felt it was very comfortable. With good fuel consumption.

Mate uses his Ranger as intended and loves it - have heard from a couple of sources that neither L200 nor Ranger good if regularly towing big loads unless you like changing head gaskets regularly.

Is it the new new one your looking at? If so its loads better than the older ranger which was Mazda based.

The new one is all ford parts and transit engines alot better to drive and more car like, the older ones are not that refined and don't have normal mod cons like Bluetooth and iPod leads etc....

My dad had one of the last ones, the Mazda based ones at it wasn't a bad machine. He did a few round trips from Ashford to Glasgow and back in a day in it.

I have use of various ones from 2003 upto current at work (The Ranger). For what they are they drive well, are comfortable up front. I would er on one as a family tourer for Europe though. There isn't much leg room for anyone above the age of 10 in the back. It is certainly okay for 4 or 5 people as a to and from site hack.

..Which was nice..

Have you not considered a Hilux?
I had an older Ranger for 7yrs and it was a great workhorse that finally expired after 200K hard miles. Sorry can't comment on the new ones.
However, I had a new L200 Barbarian for a good few months recently and just had it replaced by a new Hilux. Mine's the 2.5 and it trumps the L200 in every area apart from outright power. It drives so much better and handles great. Apart from the power the Barbarian drove no better than my 55 plate 200K Ranger

Out here, where a lot of people drive pickups, the new Ranger is very well thought of. Highest selling pickup in SA at the moment.

Link below is to "CAR" magazine test, "CAR is SA"s most reputable car magazine.

You can do it quickly. You can do it cheap. You can do it right. – Pick any two.

Thanks guys - hopefully I'll be ordering one this week.

Lightning - VW couldn't even get me one to look at so it's probably very good!
