Tin Top Recommendations - Jag X-type

Thinking of changing my daily runner. Currently have a Mk1 Leon Cupra Diesel.
It drives well but missing some of the luxury of my old audi for motorway runs.

Has anyone had a Jag x-Type estate with the sport kit on it. Quite like them and a bit different form the audi, bmw masses.
I know its a mondeo underneath. Only have about 4k to play with needs to be diesel. (I've considered BMW, Audi, MB etc)

I've just sold an x type 2.0d for my dad. To be honest I didn't like it. The interior was a bit low rent, just felt a bit cheap and a bit cramped. It drove well enough but wasnt all that economical, this was a 5 speed box not sure if the 6 speed would be better. My dad drives like miss daisy and was getting mid 40s mpg, compare that to Volvo d5 he had last year which would give 50mpg all day long. With the mondeo/jag Tdci you always have the worry of the dual mass flywheel going which is a big bill.

one plus point usual service parts are cheap.

If you are set on Ford/jag tdci, then a mondeo would win hands down for me. More spacious, nicer interior imo and cheaper than equivalent Jag.

would prefer a bmw but heard bad things about the turbos, swirl flaps etc costing big big bills.

You should get a mk4 Mody for that money. The 2.0 TDCi mk4 doesn't have a Ford engine and doesn't suffer as badly with the DM flywheel issues.

I'm pleased with mine.

swirl flaps certainly on a e39 are quite an easy job, couple of hours tops, inlet maifold off, take out the 4 or 6 swirl flaps on there mountings, cut the shaft, remove the flap and replace with a 5mm rivet and smear of silicone

Sorry meant to say I don't really want a Ford, Nothing wrong with them just not my cup of tea.

yeah the flaps can be sorted it was the turbo's going that worried me. My local indy said if it hasn't had a new one by 100k budget for one!

as said above swirl flaps easily sorted, e46 post 2004 I think had them modded from build? Turbo wise, you could say that about any TD, if it's been abused, lack of oil changes etc could all contribute. My e46 320d had 135k on it when sold and was on original turbo with no issues.

passat are ok think the estates look a bit ungainly.
I heard the bmw turbos where much more likely to go than others though and at lower mileage.
I'd love a 330d sport in any guise (or a 320d) just need someone to tell me there isn't a big bill waiting.

I would avoid 330d at your budget as you will only get the older version of the engine. A 320d with a remap will have the performance of the 330d with much better economy and lower repair bills. I really liked the 320d a very strong engine but I'm just not a diesel person hence why I got rid.

It seems 2004 onward had the turbos changed so less issues.
I'll see if I can find a nice 320d sport then.

Any views on a Merc clk C270 tdi?

Just remove the swirl flaps before they fall off job done.

Back to Jags depends your annual mileage -- The equivalent petrol Jag will be close to 2k cheaper than a diesel and likely to have done less mileage and be easier to maintain and have less likelihood of expensive problems than a diesel.

When the DMF went on my mondy it cost us about £200-£250, including a new clutch. Not exactly the big bill I was expecting tbh.

And true if you're doing few miles you could probably get a darn good 2.5 petrol x type since no-one wants them

Yes not only oil changes & oil type but driving style, especially not switching the engine off when the turbo is stonking hot just allowing it to cool off a bit makes a big difference.

MG-Rover used the BMW engine (a version without swirl flaps) and I have never heard of a turbo problem in a 75/ZT diesel.
