Car suggestion

Anyone care to suggest a car!?

I want something fun to drive and a nice (non plastic) interior.. Needs to be fun to drive on mountain twisties but equally capable of doing motorways.... Budget of around £8K

3 door ideally... 2 or 4 seats...

I quite like the Audi TT 240 Sport

Mostly because the interior is a bit different...

Alternatively a Mk4 Golf R32... but finding one in good condition that hasn't been buggered about with is tricky..

Other than those two... I quite like the z3m coupe but a good one is too expensive...

E46 M3, 350Z, Boxster....?

The TT is a nicely put together car, but not very exciting to drive. Personally I would go for an M3. Comfy, practical and great to drive, with one of the best engines ever made!

Valid point about the TT..

I had a standard 225hp version a few years ago and it was very capable but not that fast in the corners. I put it down to the computer which tries to make the car too safe..

The limited edition 240 has harder suspension and a differnt computer so I figured it might be better.... Just want something I can drive all year and enjoy being in...

I had a Seat Leon Cupra R with a remap..was so fast but it was just a "dull hatchback" no drama..

Interesting shout re the beamer... I just find they all look exactly the same...

I have an E46M3.

with that budget you get a good one and still have cash left for a few upgrades:

- brakes (essential!!)
- get yourself a sports exhaust of some kind (don't if you can't afford to put fuel in it - mine sounds soooooo good now I find myself booting it whenever possible and hanging onto lower gears just to hear that straight-six sound!!)

the chassis is well sorted and doesn't need much doing IMO, I'm just about to fit new OEM springs and dampers all round as a refresh as mine has just ticked over to 112,000 miles. It's comfortable all year round, excellent aircon, heated electrically adjustable seats with varying bolster and lumbar support, mine has the optional Harmon Kardon stereo, 6CD changer, in-built sat nav/TV options too which is nice on those long journeys.

Lots of good colours, mine is Pheonix Yellow:

I instantly thought e46 M3 but if not that what about a boxster s? or stretch a little further for a 996 911?

Bit more 'mainstream' Honda s2000?

Honda S2000 - 2006 - low miles - Full honda S/H

SLK?

Bit different, might be a bit plasticky but have an awesome engine noise

Pat, what kind of fuel consumption do you get?

A 911 would be nice but there is no storage space atall... I can get a mountain bike in the TT...

Slk is a bit hairdresser but I am now looking at AMG stuff...

Since I've had it I've averaged 24.5 mpg this a mix of stop start town, motorway trips and the occasional back road blast! - motorways it will do 30s, but short journeys seem to be what kills it, I think it dumps fuel in until it's warm.

Previous to this I had a Renaultsport Megane 230 R26 F1 which was also very good, much better on fuel, not as fast on M-way/A-road but quicker point-to-point on a bumpy B-road than the M3. Might not meet your plasticy interior criterion though!!

I've considered 996 911s, but the ones I could feasibly afford (aka the ones right at the bottom of the market) always scare me a bit as a massive potential bill could be right around the corner..

Z3m coupe is a very nice looking car and will also hold its value very well. Faster than the m3 too.

Audis are a lot more exciting with the traction off! In fact, you have to turn it off sometimes when you expect a bit of scrabbling.

Thats interesting, I have a 330 sport auto and I only get the same MPG, my running is mainly short runs to work though. I always thought the M3 would be a much thirstier beast but if I could get 20mpg then it might be viable hmmmm..............

They do over 20mpg no problem it's the running that costs that are hugely greater than a normal car, like tyres and servicing

It was a close call when I changed my car earlier in the year but ended up buying a s2 Elise over a m3 z3m z4m and boxster s, purely down to lower running costs
