Jim Clark rally :(
What can you say, I've placed myself in some stupid positions attending rally stages, early days we don't know the circumstances but my
thoughts are with all the family's of those involved and of course the crews involved.
Sad day.

Yeah thoughts are very much with those directly affected, including the drivers of course.
My Dad used to be a club level rally driver and later on I used to help him with time keeping and marshalling on Scottish rallies. I was always taught
as a kid to stay safe away from the firing line of the cars which usually meant keeping to the inside of the corner and ideally near to a large tree
for cover.
As you say, it's too early to speculate as to the circumstances but it often horrifies me to see where people choose to stand on some of the
televised rallies. I dearly hope in this case that this is just a freak accident and nobody is directly responsible.

Two freak accidents in one rally seems unlikely, but as you say thereare so many folk who stand downwind, outside of a bend which is nuts. Early
suggestions seem to be that people were standing in dangerous spots but at least one car made some unexpected motions before leaving the course. Thing
is you can pretty much expect things to go wrong at any point, that's rally.

Condolences to all concerned in this tragedy. Speaking as a rally driver I can say it's very unnerving driving at competing speeds and seeing
some of the places spectators stand. I'm not for a minute suggesting this was the case in these incidents and again stress my sorrow for all
concerned.

I just hope health and safety don't get involved and ruin what is the whole point of road rallying, the ability to be 'right there in the
action'. The last thing the sport needs is a whole load of safety barriers etc. Or worse still, the banning of all road sports.

So true but just wait for the press to jump on that band wagon....
