selling a car - and updating paperwork
re: a small time car trader
Will it need to be registered in the trader's name? Long time since I bought a car but I seem to remember there were two slips; one of which
is filled by the buyer, the other by the seller????
Basically what I am trying to find out is if it is possible to have a car for sale that is not registered to the trader?
Also ^^^^ refers to the law around 2012.

Yes when selling to a trader you get the yellow slip to send back to dvla with the traders name on it. Get a photo copy before you send it back.
Once dvla get this you will get a letter back saying you are no longer the registered keeper.
When the new buyer takes owner ship they get the green slip and the dealer sends of the v5.
Stops adding to the number of keepers.

And anyone can do it, you dont have to be registered. (well the last 3-4 'do-er-uppers' ive bought in last few years have been been as a
'trader' with no questions asked.) It wont be registered to them, the yellow slip merely notifys the DVLA that the car is 'between
owners/registered keepers'.
The slip only asks for a Name and address of the trader, (business name) and also VAT number (if they are registered)

Ta, I thought it was something like that.
But it does depend on the seller doing his/her part. Is there a legal requirment to do this, naturally, I would assume the seller would not want to
be the registered keeper as they will be liable for any offences committed by whoever drove the car?

I think it's just the number of keepers on the slip really as I believe the "sold to trade slip" should update the data base with
them being the keeper. I believe it also makes a difference regarding insurance.
