tiny steering rack
Hi
I've been looking for a very small and light steering rack or steering box for my kids 1/2 scale landrover. I know there is miniture ones
available for karts but there around £150! which is way too much
any ideas?

Quad bike? No idea what set up they use (obviously handle bars) but could be a start.

A few years ago I built a mini sandrail buggy, I got hold of a Mk2 Escort rack where we took it apart cut it down and welded it back up.
Never had any issues with it for a buggy, I was looking for a better pic but dont have any to hand at work but you get the idea.
Once you take them apart the long straight shaft has plenty scopt to be cut down.

For a kids toy would a steering shaft with a pitman arm and a coupe drag links not be enough?

^^ that's what we had on the lawnmower based things my dad made for us - it worked well enough

Some helpful suggestions.
loggyboy, thanks but that quad rack may actually still be to big! 20cm long seems to be the limit I can accommodate
I currently have a simple pitman arm and drag links but the weight of the front with the batteries in it and some grippy offroad tyres are making the
front quite heavy and the steering too heavy for my daughter to turn while the cars stationary. I have been looking at some steel cog sets that look a
promising alternative.

I fabricated steering for my go-kart as shown below. Not as good as a proper steering rack, but with some effort you can get the steering angles to
work and achieve some Ackerman effect as well. Easy to do with off the shelf parts including 4 off rod ends @ £2 each and a length of M6 threaded bar
from Screwfix. The uprights are made from thick wall tube and angle, bolted though a formed U bracket.
ETA...re-reading your last post on steering effort, mine is relatively light, but then the front of the kart is light with skinny wheel chair wheels.
It also uses MTB handlebars, which give plenty of leverage.
Maybe you could use the same design, but gear the steering column to a slave column with cogs or even a belt.

About to upgrade my sons 'lightning' plastic bin car. Plan is as follows
Link left and right wheel with solid rod between steering arms
At same point attatch bike chain
Fix bike small gear to steering shaft.
Put chain over gear
Hey presto (in theory)

Sorry to resurrect an old thread.
Did you plan with a bike chain work Mike? I’m looking to upgrade the steering on my son’s swing bin car too. The bobbin and cable design doesn’t work
very well.
