Headlight blanks - suggestions!

Afternoon all.

I'm trying to save as much weight as possible in our Clio 172 sprint car. We've stripped interior including sound deadening, fitted lexan windows, light weight battery, and a nice light race seat and wheel.

Without getting silly, the last thing on my list is the headlights. They weigh a ton, and could over a good few kilos saving. I've seen plenty of track cars with blanks fitted, and it appears these are available of the shelf for some cars.

In true locost fashion, I want to make some! Any suggestions as how best to attempt this? or should I buy some old ones, and gut the insides?

Thoughts appreciated!

One of the rallycross/autograss suppliers used to sell them cheap and mega light, easier than making them imho. Try ebay or google autograss suppliers

Can you just take the lenses off the headlights and fix them in place? They are probably plastic.

You could always spray them silver inside.

Buy a 2nd hand pair from eBay, strip the gubbins out of them, and just leave the frame & front lense? You can then chop the bits of backing stuff off as necessary to be left with a minimal carcass, yet swap the units over if you ever want lights again! I know some people used to use the Morette twin headlamp conversions to run a cold air feed to the airbox, this could also be an option for you if you fancy opening out one of the units?

(This does assume that it's not one of those stupid designs where you have to take the whole front bumper off to change them)

My friend made his own for his clio, incorporating a vent in pass side to reach air filter.

He just hollowed out an old headlight.

I'd just butcher either the old ones or a cheap ebay pair. Take them out and cut the back off leaving just the mounting points and pull out the guts.

It might be worth fitting a set of cheap DRL's as I've done a couple of track days where the weather hasn't been good (pissing down) and they required you to run with lights on.
