Rallyday 2016 at Castle Combe

I went with my 10 year old son on Saturday to the Rallyday 2016 at Castle Combe circuit. Cheap to go and some fantastic cars there as well. Metro 6R4, 205 T16, RS200 etc. Also there was a Ford Escort mk3 RS1700T on display as well (2nd one I've ever seen). There were track laps and an off road circuit, which were good to watch.

My brother in law's father was there with his 2002 WRC Proton in which we had passenger rides. Scarily fast and rather sideways, but great fun. My son slept like a log Saturday night having been fulfilled with automotive bliss.

The gent next to us had to winch his immaculate RS200 into his race lorry so he could park his rather flash Ferrari. Nice bloke and very happy for my son to sit in both his RS200 and Fezza too. He admitted running older low volume rally cars was hard on the wallet and obtaining spares was a challenge.

A great day and will probably go again

I have to say as a fan of this car to see a real one was quite special. The owner was kind enough to open the rear of the car and talk me through the construction and workings of it as well.

Son no. 1 about to be taken out on the rally stage - the grin when he got out of the car was enormous!

You can get rides?! Looks great.

How many 1700T did they make then? I thought there was perhaps only one of them given they ditched it in favour of the RS200. I got the impression there were other RWD Mk3 Escorts put together, but that the actual 'Ford' 1700T was a one-off?

(Actually - found an answer pretty quick on Google - "Most of the 18 RS 1700T examples were crushed, but a few remain"...)...

Surprised i've never seen one at FOS - given they must be some of the rarest Ford rally cars if the above is correct...

I was there with Basingstoke Motor Club - Our pitch was just behind the autotest demo. Tiger striped Chevette, a Corsa S1600, loads of Rovers and my Dads Elise.

I'd say it's rare! I've seen one before and don't think it was the same one. The one at the Rallyday was display only and didn't move, it was next to an RS200 as well.

There was a RWD mk3 escort on track, not sure if it was a bonafide 1700t, but it was sat next to me in the queue when I went out for a passenger lap in the Chevette.

Saw the car on track, but didn't know what it was. There were some spirited drivers out there and some heavy cornering going on - great fun to be a passenger and to watch too.

ETA..I saw some of the open session after 4pm and there was a chap in a blue Clio giving it the beans. Seemed a good driver - very committed to getting his lines right.

Most people don't really get what removing an engine means - scraped knuckles and much swearing as I recall.
