mini wheelarch clearance issues

Pasted from a question we've put on the mini forum. Seems a simple enough issue but could get expensive if we buy more wheels that won't clear, and we do NOTwant to fit arch spats or cut the arches, as the car bodyshell needs to stay original.

"I have a set of Superlite 12x5 alloys with Yoko A539 165 60 12 tyres on my clubman. I have standard arches, and no spats. The tyres (obviously) stick out of the arches (not a problem, this was intentional - I know it's not really legal, but that is not the issue). The problem is they are very close to the arch lip at the front when steering, and will foul when the suspension is compressed.

First question.... Are the wings on minis with spats as standard different, as I am sure I've seen people running these wheels without clearance problems?

Second question.... Has anyone fitted 12x5 minilight-style wheels to a Clubman without any clearance problems, and if so what type?

I believe the issue is the offest - the Superlites I have are ET15 (according to the website - I've not actually checked my wheels) but I've just spoken to Revolution wheels, and their Minator wheels, in 12x5 are ET28, which I think would give me enough clearance (just).

Has anyone got 12x5 Minators on a clubman with unmodified wings??

Any help would be much appreciated. "

I'm pretty sure Sport Pack cars had trimmed wheelarches and plastic "restrictors" on their steering racks but I don't believe the factory trimmed the fenders on 12" cars.

I'm running 165 60 12 tyres on my 1275GT on the stock steel wheels, no arches, with no fouling and my car is quite low. There may be something to Keith's "teardrop spacer" and bent tie-bar discussion but I think the thing that's killing you has got to be the wheel backspacing.

Yes the later minis have wings with a different wheel arch profile in them. You can get the templates off the web to cut yours to the same spec too
