I wouldn't purely because I've been had before on the "needs a bew battery" thing, bought a new battery and it too was dead
within two days, cue weeks of electrical gremlin hunting and fuse pulling  , that said, some of my most reliable transport has been well into
bangernomics territory (less than £500), I say keep looking!

The days of the £100 runner with T&T are long gone in my experience.
I bought a cheap SAAB last year for £350, I sold it on ebay a year later for £560.
The bloke who bought it had been trying to buy a cheap car for weeks but couldn't find owt.
I'd gamble £350 on that 306, I replaced my SAAB with a 306 2 weeks ago, it uses half the fuel and is a suprisingly decent car

i got an old k reg astra estate a few years ago. paid £250 for it with 12 months mot and 6 months tax. drove it for 6months put 30k on it then
flogged it on for £500.
all i did to it was have a free oil change that got thrown in with my kwikfit insurance and replace the rocker cover seal and a rear shock total cost
£24 for 30k of motoring.
as far as i am aware it is still running fine for the chap that had it off me.
Anything With Tits or Wheels Will cost you MONEY!!

Keep looking and get in with the local motorsports club. Those guys can be quite frugal in their acquisitions, and often have problems with space.
That thing looks like a lot of someone else's problems you probably don't need.

Too expensive. You have to ask yourself why they havent done the little its and sell it fr more. hours job max. The window problem with have broken
the regulator. Theyr expensive.
They are good cars.

try and get something with MOT, you only need it to fail on something like emmisions and the cost of the car can suddenly be overtaken by parts. I
bought an astra for £250, did 1000 mile a week in it for 4 months without a hitch, the MOT ran out and it needed a new cat and some springs and it
cost me £250, i sold it a week later for £500

(but then again by that logic I need to get 23 years out of the focus )
I got my old 106 as an MOT failure (from a mate at the garage that failed it)
cost me £90 in parts to sort it (which I knew about before I bought it)
I got 45k out of it in 4.5 years with just a few things done each year (not all stricktly needed) and sold it for £150 in better mechanical condition
than I got it in apart from a little rust....
I wouldn't count it as a banger the whole time I had it

i didnt expect all these responses!
Unfortunately I don't have a mate at a garage, or any mates with those sorts of connections so a £100 is going to be a hard one to come by!
I would like to get 5 years out of whatever car I buy as I'm going off to do medicine next year and wont exactly be in a position to upgrade, so
what I was trying to do was find a car I quite like the look of for very little money.
I guess you can only really have one or the other though (a reasonable car OR a cheap car)

bigger cars are often cheaper to buy, but I'm assuming you want cheap insurance/fuel as well....
from my own experience I'd go looking for the ~10 year old car thats had one old granny owner from new and as basic a spec as you can get
they tend to have been well looked after with not many miles on the clock and the simpler the car - the less bit there are to break
these probably arn't on ebay - best be is to ask the garages about there trade in's (the ones they'd normally send strait to the
auction)
both my 106 and the Mk1 fiesta I had before it were old granny mobiles
the 106 was 11 years old and the fiesta was 21 years old - both with 4 speed boxes and carbs (none of this fancy moden EFI stuff)
I got 8 years out of the 2 of them and the fiesta was a free car

306D are good cars, we have a P-reg 306 xsi, 160k miles.
Passenger window failed (same as this) due to lack of use, it is now held up with a strong spring (we never need it, the only time would be french
paege, but its not going to leave the country again). Seat runners can fail.
Still on original clutch and exhaust.
Radiators rust through, sunroofs leak, abs lights (problem under drivers seat in earlier model), but good solid cars and drive nicely. Rear disks
rust, and handbrake is a bit crap.
Bits fall off, but nothing worthy of note. There is always a risk with old cars, but at £350, you can always pop it back on the bay.
FWIW I don't expect to get more than £350 when I sell my (wifes) one.

Against the majority vote I have emailed them a few questions re: previous MOTs and engine running.
Insurance is "cheap" at £700 for the year after my accident - it would cost me more than twice as much to insure a similarly priced fiesta
£1450!
Does anyone have a spare D turbo rad

Bangernomics always makes sense, but there are a couple of simple rules.
1) Read between the lines.
Any advert where it says "should pass MOT without problems", "just needs a", "haven't got the time" is best
avoided. If it's that simple, they would do it themselves.
1)Avoid atractive barges.
Yes, a BMW 750i is a wonderful thing, and yes you can buy one for £500, but you shouldn't. It was a £50K in 1990 and still costs that sort of
money to fix.
3)KISS
Keep it simple stupid. If you're buying a cheap car, you'll be fixing it up as you go along. No need to have all sorts of fancy bits to go
wrong. On a wet night, a fully functional poverty spec. car is infinitely preferable to a broken down luxo barge.
4) Don't be scared.
When I recently bought the Synergie, I specifically targeted a car which needed a few jobs done to it. A lot of people avoid such stuff, but we can
fix it. Some simple repairs to a cheaply bought car can sometimes pay dividends. Average prices for the one I bought are around £2000-£2500. Mine
stands me at half that with the jobs done.
5)Consider the auctions.
I bought my Synergie there, eyes wide open. It has to be cheap enough to get the work carried out and be on target. Don't buy on the first
visit, because if you do, you won't see that certain cars have been throught so many times, they should have a rent book.
6) Ebay is expensive.
That's my take on bangernomics.

£350 with no MOT, looks a bit dear to me.

My take on Bangernomics is if I had a car that I probably couldn;t sell to a guy coming to see it then i'd ebay it.
I sold a 4.6v8 Rangerover with engine that was nearly gone on eaby with "no know probs" for 2K but I would't have like to take it
on numerous test drives with prospective buyers/.... so moral is
if Ebay BEWARE.

It sounds like a good price if there was nothing wrong with it. If you can get that stuff fixed, there's nothing else wrong with it, and you can
get the parts cheap it might be worth a go. Then again I'm sure if you look around you can find something better for the same money.
Another one to add to the Bangernomics:
You first car should be paid for with the money in your pocket. Then you won't be afraid to make mistakes

How about..
Nissan Almera etc
-decently made granny cars available really cheap.
- younger people don't like the image and older people buy expensive cars so they are cheap for what you get.
-I have one (£400) as a second car and for the kids to drive - no problems in 18 months of high mileage driving. No complaints.

Your ex 106 is still going.......
Its getting a set of front calipers and an oil change off to rome and romania again this year.......
Just keeps going.
Zilspeeds golf is a fantastic pocket rocket .......but we will get a few years out of that one.
On marque specific forums the guys tend to dispose of very good runners t&t for very little if the car is a ford on a vw forum.
Seen bemers for 250 on a local dub forum.......scrappage has done a lot of damage in the supply and demand of good cheapys....
Not as much damage thats going to be felt by the independant repairers......with the 7 year warrenties.
Buy a kia and run it hard.....see how long the 7 years goodwill lasts

Yeah that 7 year warranty looks a bit too good to be true, then again our 5 year old mondeo has needed tyres, brake pads and wheel alignment in 50k
miles... Should hit the 100k mark before the 7 years though.
Ever thought of getting an old E-class Merc? I've seen a good few of them still going great with over 200k on the clock
First diesel one on autotrader and I'd take "needs a bit of tlc
to shine" as "it looks like a 20 year old car"

window reg changes can also be PITA because it means taking the door cars off which means faffing around with little bits of trim, door handles etc
etc etc...
