Audi A4 1.9 tdi 2003 - Water Temp sender help

Hi all,

Gutted. Picked up my new car at the weekend. Not only is the battery dead and i had to bumps atrt it twice yesterday, the coolant water temp gauge is not working.

I spent so much time researching and finding the best car I could and feel very flat now as a result.

I have heard the temp sender unit is a common failure from what I have read ont he net, but wanter to see if anyone had any adivce or guides etc? Most I can find is for petrol of V6 engine.

Kris done it on my 110 TDi. cant remeber it being a major ordeal.

seem to remeber that it is between the engine and rear bulkhead and yes its quite comon for them to go.

Ps IIRC it does temp for ECU as well so may not be running at its best at the mo.

I have the haynes somwhere so worst case should be able to scan.

For finding VW stuf try searching for the first 3 charactrs of your engine code

heard it is common, but new car, no manual yet etc, just nervous and want to be sure.

any scans etc will be great

how do i find engine code? i also need a good source of VAG parts online

mines the 130 sport, guess its the same block.

when my battery dies me fuel gauge didnt work and range said zero. then i left it for a few hours and bump started and back to normal.

Kriss I have an OBDII scanner if you want to check your codes.
Have you tried a volt meter on your battery to see if it's charging?
I have one of those too!!!!

nothing is being thrown up on the screen on the dash, just the gauge for water not moving!

how do the error code machines work?

The engine code is on the label on top of the cam cover.

IIRC the sensor is on the back of the head towards the drivers side, think its a blue 4 pin. easy to change and about 4 quid from gsf.

Common as muck on all VAG tdi's.

If you have a CAS motor factors near you they seem to be the cheapest for batteries at the moment. Or halfwits with a trade card. Theyr big and they do need a good hump to start them engines up so a slightly shagged battery will be no good.

As martin said check its charging first.

my mate is a halfords store manager and i have a trade card

i take it if no charging the alternator is shagged!!!

Most 2 litre diesel cars take a 096 battery

Make sure you get a decent quality heavy duty battery as you can't cut corners on batteries for diesels. Tanya batteries are the best online supplier for batteries next day delivery very very good price especially for Varta Batteries.
