Run Flats life expectancy

Last year i got some Michelin Run Flat tyres on my Laguna.

I have had them for about 15-20k miles max.
The tires were 7mm thread when i bought them. Runned them at 33 psi as they are at the front of my car and I always use to run this pressure on all my cars.

I can see that the middle of the tire is on the limit but the sides are ok for another couple of thousand miles.

Does it sound normal? Only 15-20K miles?
Most of the miles where on Motorway and I have hardly spin them when accelerating and granny style driving.

Over-inflated tyres will wear more in the centre than on the sides. They will also probably be unsafe.

Maybe your "usual pressure" is too high? What does the handbook say?

The handbook as far as I know on all my previous Renaults was 33Psi.

Could it have been done because they are RFs and the sidewall is very strong?

Runflats usually wear on the shoulders quicker than the centre due to the very hard sidewalls.

But, the ones on my Cooper S only used to last about 10000miles of normal driving.

Don't think so. My run-flats wore on the outer edges (perhaps I should check tyre pressures every now and again?). Rears (rwd) went just over 30k and the fronts went to nearly 40k

Had run flats on my Ibiza FR Tdi (Co Car.) It took me 16k miles to do both front and rear. The fronts needed changing (badly) after 10k miles and I asked the tyre fitters to move the rears to the front so that I could get them worn out ASAP. All replaced with Eagle F1s - car transformed.

In summary, I do not like run flats - be thankful they are on their way out!

Sounds like over inflated tyres to me.

How does it drive? I'd expect it to be a bit skittish, particularly in the wet.

Have a look here for tyre pressures (Laguna is 3rd table down). It's only the bigger engined or estate models that need higher pressures, most models are nearer 30psi.

Well, I am lucky that i can get a good deal on them. I believe a lot cheaper than normal tires.

I have to admit though, they do not grip as well as others due to the hard side walls and do like to skid on wet, but i don't drive like a loony any more.

I am just puzzled why i only got 15-20K out of them and unbranded tires on my clio used to take me to 30+ and have plenty of thread on them. Ok, Heavier car but ......

Very cheap tyres (in my experience) are usually very hard as well hence they don't grip as well, but do wear well.
