Road side census
On my way to work today i got made to pull over by the police for a census.
Pulls over and a woman askes simply where have you come from and where are you heading. simple i think. she walks off and this copper apears at my
window.
Cop: You know why im here?
Me: Errr no.
Cop: you were on your phone as you pulled in.
Me: errr no.
Cop: yes you were both me and my partner saw you.
Me: well you are both wrong.
Cop: can i see your phone.
Cop walks off wi phone then comes back and hands it over.
He then goes over car looking for fauls as he has realised he was full of sh*t and i wasnt in the wrong.
I get to go with no apoligy and wishing id ran over the w@nkers foot as i left.
The copper was a right arrogant tw@t which didnt help. Just pisses me off.

yep, you do get them like that. they chance it in the hope that you wont fight them.
what to do is get in touch with the head office and file a formal complaint. unfortunately you cant do much without badge numbers, ir at least a car
number

One o'clock in the morning I was driving home and some wide boy pratt comes shooting up behind me flashing lights and trying to get me to speed
up.
I was too tired to react so ignored him, then at the end of the town when road went dual carriageway he pulled along side me, I ignored him. The the
c*** flashs his blue lights, I look and he tells me to wind the window down, he says" it's 30 through Dinas Sir, not 32".
Any respect I had evaporated that night.
I know some nice coppers, but I have also met the type this thread is about!

Defiantly file a complaint. Get your local MP on their case as well. If no-one challenges them, they'll keep doing it. If they get a hard
time, they might ease off a bit.

Surely the boss would know which of his police force was helping with the census? Nice little police lineup (quite literally  ). My understanding is
that the census police aren't working in their official capacity anyway on the basis that that would be a complete waste of tax payers money IE
they should be doing more useful things like nicking crimbos.
I had an argument with the police doing the census about why the hell they were forcing cars to stop to help with a traffic survey. Apparantly,
they're not telling you to stop in an official capacity (they are asking you to in an off-duty capacity), but of course if you did not stop they
could suddenly decide that in your case they were trying to stop you in an offical capacity and you refused in which case you'ld get done for
it.
Personally I think the whole thing sucks. They have no right to stop people for that purpose.

What legal powers did he use to take your phone? If he looked at the content on it without sufficient cause then he has breached your right to
privacy. And, if he has looked on it then evidence he had found would not be evidentially secure and likely inadmissable in court - obviously a
jobsworth!

you legally have to stop for the census but you can refuse to complete the census.
thats as far as im aware.

he asked is he could see the phone. i was in a rush to get to work so gave him it. he checked the call log on the phone and saw nothing for today. it
was 7.35am.
Him checking the phone didnt bother me as it proved i wasnt using it. also the phone was in a phone sock in my pocket which i have to remove my
seatbelt to get at lol.
It was just the coppers attitude that pissed me off more than any thing. The way he tried to talk down at me like he was better.

Love these roadside censuses (if that's what the plural is). Couple of years ago we got caught in a massive tailback going to work in Norwich,
probably took 20-25 minutes to get from the back of the queue to the census point, same question, where from where to, by the time I'd got to
work it had cost me 40 minutes. As we left the census point they gave us a flyer, 'Improving your journey to work' and so on
Irony they don't do

If you followed my other threads I use a camera recorder in my car called a T-eye which has saved me from 2 tickets so far.
If you had one in your car, you could have complained about the accusation against you and got the ar*ehole disiplined.

No need for arrogance IMO. Why, I've even let 2 people off in as many weeks for using their phones. They seemed decent enough and they coughed
straight away. Didn't seem any more of a reason IMO (again) to press the matter.
See, there are some good ones of us still around.

Definitly make an official complaint. If you don't do anything they'll just keep doing it in the hpe of 'illegally' getting
some one to confess to minor crimes (Thats why they try the 'you know why I've stopped you.)

There are some good cops out there, but the phone thing is getting bad i must see about 10 people while on the bike per day. u can always tell the
ones on the phone as they drift across the lane
i got pulled on Sunday for illegal number plate on the bike. as a few of us were on a ride out £60 fine! only thing is the date on the ticket is wrong
i know i wasn't in Aylesbury on Saturday i was working

Here in Manchester they decided to do an all day census on the A5103, this will mean nothing to most people, but it is a continuation from the end of
the M56 into the centre of Manchester! After they'd caused a 15 mile, 3-lane tailback, they suddenly cancelled it

I once got pulled for a similar "routine road check" and an officious young WPC asked me where I was going. I answered
"Kilmarnock" which is where I live. She then asked my passenger where he was going and he answered, "funnily enough, the same place
as him!" at which point we both started laughing! She was less than impressed!
We were still roaring with laughter as we drove away!

No arrogance, just one person is lying.
If I lied to police, I could be prosecuted.
Im just pointing out that twice Ive been stopped and accused of different offences, but as soon as I pointed out my camera with gps/speed/location
software, it was quickly dropped.
Im not suggesting people are rude to the police only to protect yourself against being accused of something that an officer has assumed about me.
When you go to court, who will be believed?
The camera would tell the story, just as a police camera would.

Martin. I wasn't saying you were being arrogant mate, I meant there's no need for the police officer to have been like that. Sorry if it
read wrong.
Joel. I still don't believe it's said to try and trap people. It's more of an attitude gauge to see what the person is going to be
like and affects how they're going to be dealt with i.e. strictly by the book or nice and casual.
Whatever. There's still no need for rudeness at the outset I don't believe.

You're right, I'm never rude.
I let the officer have his say, told him he was being recorded etc from the outset, defended myself, backed up with my camera/gps proof and wait!
Also answered questions to why I record my driving. It dates back to when I had an accident in 2005 and was attacked in my car and lost to the lying
tw*t in court.
