New Tyres Handling Altered

Morning All,

Had two new tyres on the rear of my 320d a couple of weeks ago. Switched back to Michelin Pilots for a change and these were the standard fits.

Since fitting it is now really twitchy and wanders around far more. Last night I had a couple of instances were it just seems to drift across the road while going straight! Checked the pressures and they are fine. It was in the BMW garage last week for a full service and they didn't report anything. Just wondered if any of you guys had an idea what could of happened to affect the handling so much. By the way they are run flats but the previous set of Bridgestones were too.

Thanks,
Steve

Run flats on the Beemer are known for having a harsh ride and very stiff sidewalls.
Perhaps a set of non runflats and a tin of tire seal next time

My missus had exactly the same problem on her 320 - it seems to be well know (to the dealers) that if you change either the fronts or rears, and the other end of the car has different tyres or almost completely worn tyres the handling is affected. In the case of the ones we had it made the handling positively dangerous, and was only fixed when we had new tyres on the other end of the car.

We had the new tyres fitted just as we were driving off to the lakes on holiday, and the handling was so bad (after we'd check pressures, treads not backwards, right size tyres and no obvious faults with the tyres) that we stopped and had a full wheel alighment check and check on all the bushes etc at the first tyre place we came to.

Regards
Hugh

Hugh,

That sounds very similar. I do have one Michelin and the other is a Bridgestone on the front due to a puncture and the garage not having the tyre I wanted in stock. I may have the Bridgestone changed to see if that cures it as the Michelin is onlya couple of months old.

Thanks,
Steve

Your symtoms sound the same as ours - cured as soon as we had 4 tyres the same. I'm just puzzled as to why its such a marked effect - I'm guessing its related to the traction control? I've never had a similar thing from any other car I've had, whether front, rear or 4WD.

Good luck
Hugh

This is actually scary at times and I class myself as knowing what I am doing!
