Which Se7en...

I've decided to buy a completed car to play with over the autum months...

Identified three potentials.

1995 Westfield Red-Top on Twin 45's at £6.5k. Nice clean looking car. Q plate.
2000 Westfield 1640 CVH on Twin 40's at £5.5k. Beautiful condition. Q plate.
2001 Quantum Xtreme 1.8 Zetec on Twin 40's at £5.5k. Really good order. Age-related plate.

I've owned an Xtreme before with a Pinto engine. Loved everything (particularly the kit quality) except the engine. The 1.8 Zetec in the potential car is pushing out around 150bhp - 40 more than the old Pinto I had.

The Red-Top Westie is about 165bhp. Easily upgradeable to the 200 mark, but is it a lot heavier than the other two?

The CVH has Kent 22 cams and should be around the 130bhp mark. I know bugger all about this engine!

I'm not going to fall into the trap of changing an engine again as I want to drive-it... not trip over parts destined for eBay! I may upgrade the existing engines though if there is more to be squeezed out at reasonable cost. What do the masses think is likely for improving each engine on a budget of say £1000.

Thanks in advance!

Redtop is the best engine there, and I would expect the westy to the better of the 2 chassis'. Its better looking too.

I would have the extreme and a 2L would be an easy straight swap if you wanted a bit more.

Westie with a red top will be quicker and esier to resell if you dont take it to bits

The red top, not least because of the TSW EVOs. When I was 17, they were all I wanted in life...

redtop should be simple to re-sell as well. But depends on quality of build..

The Westfield with redtop does looks the best of that bunch, but be sure to try sitting in one unless you are relatively slim and not too tall. It doesn't say it's a wide body, so assume it's narrow.

Just do a search under John Lowe on the various galleries for Scottish hills and sprints.

Some can be found here

Of the three cars in the original post I would have the Red top without question.
I ran two red top Calibras for a total of over 100k miles without any mechanical problems.
And the Extreme looks awful IMHO.
That Fury looks a good bet though.
Geoff.

As I am very impressed with my Xtreme, I would say go with that one.

However, the idea of a nice red top in a westie is very appealing too...

Does that help?

Ha Ha... NO!

I agree with you on your assessment... having had a Quantum (and a few other Kit Cars) I'd say that it's a very under-rated kit. A wee bit heavier than some other 7-a-likes, but I think if all weight figures quoted were not just optimistic guesses then the gap wouldn't be by much! The engineering is also very interesting and the handling excellent.

That said... the Red-Top's relatively cheap 'tuneability' keeps it hot in the running!

Oh, I don't know!
