Car insurance policies

If someone is deceased doe's their car insurance become void?

Can that policy be transferred into someone else’s name?

Has anyone else encountered this/

Mum mother died last week and she still has ten months remaining on her policy. I've got relatives coming over from the US and they would like to use the car while there here, so I was wondering if I could change the policy into their name.

I would imagine the insurers would say you need a fixed UK address and a UK drivers license. Might be easier to just add any driver to the vehicle.

I would imagine the insurance goes with the policyholder as insurance companies seem to have all the bases covered when it comes to screwing more money out of you. I recently had a bump on my bike and as there were no independent witnesses it was settled 50/50. My bike premium almost doubled (£140 to £270) and they added £20 to my car policy with a different insurer because I now have a "claims record". How come my car no claims bonus doesn't count towards my bike insurance on the same basis ?

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

A friend of mine had a situation like this recently and was told that the policy could continue as it was until it ran out, but no changes could be made to the policy. He was a named driver on the policy and was allowed to continue using it, but it only had a couple of months to run.

No policy road cover ceases at the exact time of death.

The legal reason is very clear cut a dead policy holder cannot give his/her permission for anyone else to drive his/her vehicle.

The vehicle is however covered for damage & theft while not in use.

Just to add to BT's comment ^.
Notify the insurance company asap.
Depending on the company the policy may be transferable to a driver named on the policy provided it's paid up. In a recent case the insurer refunded part of the premium as there was now only one driver on the policy.
Unlikely they'll provide cover for others not currently named on policy.

Also don't forget to notify DVLA as to change of owner. Leave owners transfer signature blank but enclose a letter explaining the circumstances.
Also if driver had notifiable illness or restrictions on their license the Drivers Licensing dept at DVLA needs notifying.
HTH and condolences, Pewe
