Can't Get in my Car!

Damn, blast and a more than just a little tarnation!

My backs bendability has lessened to the point that it's now virtually impossible for me to get in out of the Procomp The roll-cage is going to have to come off! Bit of a shame as i like the 'shape' of the car with the cage on.

I had the same problem a few years back! I went to my Chiropractor who got me into several different positions (a half nelson was included I think ) and after a few yelps from me I was able to walk again AND get into my car!

sorry, its not funny i know. i tak eit by the sound of taking the cage off, its not a case of loosening up a before you can fit in again?

Please, please see a physio not a chiropractor....

A physio will be able to tailor a range of excercises for you which will benefit you longer term and you'll not have to pay the repeat visit bills to the chiropractor.

LOL... don't worry about the medical side of things chaps - the best in the various medical businesses have looked at it for years now and they've all concluded that it's proper knacked. It's all about the pain management now and just dealing with flare-ups as they happen.

Anyway... the car! I've said it before - I bought into the Seven style design because I could just step-into them, slide down and get comfy in my wee cocoon. Getting out was just a reversal of the same process!

I did anticipate that the cage would have to come off it at some time, but not this soon

It's made up my mind though - I'm going for the complete refresh... would be pointless not to! So let the strippage commence (and no - there will be no sale to follow! All components will be re-fitted!).

PS - Just my tuppence on the whole Chiropractor 'thing'... I've seen lots of Doctors, Misters and Professors, and each of them have told me to stay away from Chiropractors as they will only irritate my condition. I'm sticking to their advice!

look back through the old posts about scotts back - I don't think any physios or chiropractors are going to help

I take it the cage is bolted on - do you have a normal roll bar to swap it over ?

I think, given previous threads that have included some of his medical info, Scootz is more than aware of the options available to him and no amount of manipulation is going to get him to bend to get in through the cage.

Scootz - have you tried going in and out through the "roof"? Quite a common approach amongst the racers. Hoik yourself up onto the side roof bar then transfer your *rse to the rear bar whilst swinging your legs over the side bar. Lower your legs into the cockpit and lower your torso using your arms on the top of the cage to lower you. Getting out is the reverse. Use the cage to pull yourself up, *rse on rear bar, swing legs over side of cage and lower yourself using the side roof bar. It's not the easiest thing to thing to describe in words. Much easier if you can get someone to show you.

Unfortunately it's a welded cage, so my favourite tool is in for some abuse!

I've just tried using the *rse-through-roof method. I actually found the side bars quite helpful to lift myself up on.

I'll ponder it some more!

get some one to lower you in with your engine crane

but seriously - would fitting a slightly higher rollcage give you the space to get in and out ? (i.e. remake it with a few extra inches in the height)

unable to race some years ago, due to caged car access. I went to see a physio.

Who gave me specific exersizes using the cage to loosen my back, worked a treat

not that daft an idea - there was chappy at Stoneleigh on the MK owners club area in wheel chair that had adapted what looked like to me an engine hoist to lower himself into his car and had, from memory, boltable cage bits. (search the forumnae as I'm sure this has been discussed before)

until you quit them pies, you can get a mate to follow you around in this:

If yours is the green car above?

Fit another bar to the cage from the centre of the front roll bar to the centre of the rear.
Stand on the sill, swing over the side roll bar, stand on seat, lower self down holding onto left hand roll bar and new central bar.
A removeable streeing wheel would also help.

Shame to chop up a cage and reduce some structural rigidity

A Caged cage designed for Caterhams from years ago. Just drop the outside bar...

take note of the "Skateboard Grip Tape" on the side impact bar...

Cheers Steve... but you've seen the size of me - I'd never get through the D-shape!

Using a side-impact bar as a 'step' seems a pretty good Idea though... that coupled with a straight bar running lengthways might be the answer!

When I said ditch the outside bar, that was just so that you could climb in with ease. At the end of the day, you want it for safety rather than competition at this stage (?) so you could leave the Pax side standard, but fit a wider longitudunal top bar, like Matt's current Procomp cars have. Only you could make it a fair bit wider to get your 28" waist through the gap
