Veg Oil - Advice Please!
Just bought myself a poverty-spec TDI VW Bora to make the commute a bit cheaper than it was with the GTI6. It's V-reg with a pre-PD engine
giving a whole 90bhp!
However, I've heard that you can run these engines quite successfully on veg oil and was looking to know people thoughts on this. What I should
look out for? Do I need a certain pump/filter/pre-heater to do it properly? What mix can I get away with? Are there any secondary problem like
insurance invalidation or breakdown firms refusing to tow you when they find out?!
The car didn't cost me that much but enough that I'd rather not totally knacker it!

are you thinking of using second hand oil, or new from a shop? Also, neat or a mix?

i just used to mix virgin veg oil with derv, 50/50.

I'm sure if you hunt for a VW forum there will info. For example, Peugeot diesels fall into 3 categories for running on Veg. Ones that run on it
no probs like the old 1.9s, ones that should run on it but have the wrong type of seals in the diesel pump, eg some of the 2.1s and the ones that
won't, the HDis. Do be sure before you try it.

As I understand it, if you've got one of the new common rail diesels they won't run on veg oil as it's too thick and clogs up the
injectors. However, you can buy bio diesel 'processors' that can turn the veg oil into stuff that will work in the modern engines.
I've been very tempted to get one, but I've not managed to secure a decent supply of old oil so it's a bit of a gamble to buy one
not knowing whether I can get hold of the raw materials to run it.

I would like to ease my heavy burden and make my own bio....
New oil in the shops is about the same as derv at the pumps so no advantage these days.
When it it was 46p a litre in Tesco I used to buy the 3 litre bottles then just tip them straight in the tank outside.
Now I've made the decision to make my own bio the supply of old oil was dried up! All the chippys now sell the stuff to willing collection
companys!
If I had a steady supply of old oil now I would be outside red neckking my bio plant and driving round in the gas guzzler thinking which Di would be
suitable in the MNR
Any one want to share?

I used to run new veg oil from lidl. 50/50 with derv in my audi 80 tdi and my tdi passat. I had my audi on 80% veg in the summer. Never had a
problem and the cars ran smoother. Stopped when the price went to the same as diesel. Its back to a quid a litre now for veg in lidl. And iv seen
it for 86p recently aswell. so the saving is back. Its also cheaper if you buy 25 litre drums from macro or other cash n carries.. OR set up a
thing with an indian type supplies shop. They get it cheap as chips. DONT put it anywhere near a PD engine it will shaft the injectors and tandem
pump. Bio diesel does aswell.
I was looking at using used oil and filtering it but its too much arse. has to be filtered to so many micron and it needs a heater and filters etc.
To work properly or it gums the pump up. People on ebay sell drums of used veg oil. Search for WVO. Waste Veg Oil.
Google running a car on veg oil and theres loads of info. You are aloud to run a few thousand litres now without declaring it.

I have been reading a bit about it on another forum (VWT4forum) and there seems to be alot of people running it in 1.9td's but the 2.5's
need a seperate tank so that you switch over once your engine is up to temp, I havent used any in my van yet but im going to start soon I think, just
a bit scary the thought of just putting veggie oil in! in the winter I think most people seem to be mixing it 50/50, Any one on here run a VW T4 1.9td
on veggie oil?
