DIY corner weighting?

I've been looking in to the price of digital corner weighting kits and they seem to range from £400 second hand/busted up to £1400 from Rally Design ect.
This is far beyond what I can afford to spend so I started looking on Alibaba and found commercial floor scales with ramps that would take 1000kg each with 0.5kg accuracy for $50 each. I have never used a corner weight system before so the question is are they accurate enough at 0.5kg?
If they are any good for the purpose would there be interested in a set of four with ramps for around £200-250 delivered?

Do you need 4 and why? Surely just the one and weigh each corner individualy? As for the accuracy, again is it really that critical? Would have thought getting each corner weight relative to the diagonal more important than the absolute figure?... Then again this might well be total bollox!

I've looked at these scales before myself and they are tempting but it's a good bit of cash to splash to find out they're crap.

If they come with ramps, and have reasonable accuracy, quality and repeatability, it's got to to be a good alternative for people who only do set-up once in a while?

Why don't you order a set to see what the quality is like - could always flog them on on ebay if they're not worth taking on?

Thats was very helpful thanks, did'nt even cross my mind to do a search on here should have known better.

I'm looking at getting a set of these as I'm going back in to building rear engined grass track cars and space framed stock cars, they will be useful for getting the engine/gearbox in the right place from the start.

how about these

180KG DIGITAL ELECTRONIC GLASS LCD WEIGHING BODY SCALES BATHROOM HELPS LOSE FAT

how bigger variance do people get in each corner weights? i assume my car is around 600kg, and these max allow 720kg but am i likely to find a corner being over 180kg?

Is tht 600kg with youin it, as thats how it should be done. If not and with only a small error in you assumed weight you'd possibly be over 180 on at least one corner.

Was just wondering if the 'Auto off' feature on the digital scales might be an issue - maybe by the time you get the car on and settled they've gone to sleep...

Trouble is then I'm guessing you'd have to lift the car off to regain the zero point before switching back on...?

I bought some cheap analogue scales to do mine, very awkward and they only last one go
Every time I lifted the car up the zero was miles out on them!

Digital ones have the problem of freezing once a steady weight is picked up and then turning off after a few seconds as Geoff has said.
If you can find a way of disabling those two functions you're onto a winner for budget diy corner weighting!

A little more pricey, but still cheaper than a proper set of scales and the same cost as one trip to a specialist

£116 for a set of 4

These would do the job I would think

Heavy Duty Industrial Digital Postal Scales Max Weight 200KG 440lb LCD Backlight

I have emailed asking whether they freeze with a steady weight or not, I'm pretty sure they don't though.

I have ordered one, will just walk it around the car and use blocks of wood on the other three wheels.

I just had a reply back.

They stay responsive to weigh changes and don't freeze up!

Would it be ok with just one, or is 2 better to stick at opposite corners?

Perfect then

It's my toy car, three block of wood at the same height, mount the read out on a stick and raise and lower the car.

It will take longer, but ultimately the same result and one set of scales may provide more consistent results.

Scales turned up today, hopped on them and an immediate problem.... 88.9kg WTF, how did that happen?

Apart from needing to eat less they have do not freeze unless you want to capture the reading, sat on flat ground and moved around the weighing table and only got 0.2kg deflection from standing in the middle so they should be ideal, my bathroom scales required you do drop centrally.

The display lead to table is maybe 1.5m long
The display is nice and clear with big numbers, should be easy to read when sat in the car under any wheel.
They feel a bit flimsey so care is required, lower the car do not drop it.
Bonus, they can be USB powered

Looking forward to setting the car up with these next year.

Cheers for the reply on these I will get a couple ordered ASAP.

This year I went down a route of saving some weight on the car and me and so far just replacing the huge 17" alloys and heavy vented cosworth front brakes has netted me 20kg and then removing my gut by the sum of 10kg when the spring comes the car is going to feel so much better.

After doing the corner setting up it should be even better.

I won two auctions this week, one for a 181kg scale with remote screen, one for a 160kg scale with a built in screen (for the front wheels)
£38 for the 2!
