Spun Bearing Subaru Diesel
Work colleague broke down in his 09 Subaru 2.0 diesel. Its been diagnosed as a spun main bearing, repair cost £3500!!!! Anyone had any experience
with this?

No experience as such, but I'd guess engine out, dismantle, line bore main bearing and new parts.
Would a 2nd hand engine not be cheaper?

Price sounds too cheap but I would have thought a new short engine or secondhand engine would be the minimum repair
Being as it is a model well off the mainstream good secondhand low mileage secondhand diesel engines even imported from Japan would be like gold
dust.

no experience but i recall seeing many diesel failures on the net when i was deciding what 4x4 to have and I fancied one of these but decided not to
risk it

Was at the local specialists getting our Impreza serviced and they had a Legacy diesel parked up outside.
I was asking the mechanic about it as i was considering one as our next motor and he said said that the bottom end had gone and basically it was scrap
and was going to break it for parts as you couldn't get a short motor from anywhere, second hand motors go for big money if you could find one
and Subaru would only sell you a full engine for mega bucks.
He also said it was pot luck with the engines whether they went, some go at low miles while others go on for ever , there didn't seem to be a
common factor.
So that was me well and truly put off

Just had a bearing spin on an Astra diesel. Got a good used crank, a new set of main and big end shells Cleaned everything up and the jobs all good
£160.

Presumably you did the work yourself?
When you factor in labour cost of a garage it will be ££££

That cost is for parts only. It took us a day to do and we took a chance as our time is free and the parts were cheap. Bet a Scooby replacement crank
wont be as easy to find and while the job was easy enough on the Astra I don't think I'd like to attempt it on an 09 Scooby.

Agreed - 09 Subaru diesel could be a lot of work at home!

i would assume its engine out and split the case

It's gone now anyway - he found a company will to buy it off him for £1000. Either that or scrap it.
