For the education of an ignorant southerner, what is the "sauce" in "salt and sauce"? Normal ketchup or a special Scottish concoction?

"Gold Star brown sauce". If that's anything like HP brown sauce then it seems like a good plan to me; I've never been keen on vinegar with fish and chips, normally just have salt.

EDIT: Just seen Blakes reply, sounds revolting!

Salt and LOTS of sauce all the way! It's just so dry and tasteless without it!

The 'sauce' is a mixture of malt vinegar and brown sauce... I've seen a reference to 'Gold Star' brown sauce - it's similar, but more 'runny' and slightly more 'vinegar-gry'.

One of my biggest frustrations is that they don't do 'sauce' in Aberdeenshire... shame really as their fish and chips are the best!

As for Engurlund... what is it with leaving the skin on the fish - get rid of it!

And those of you living in the Tyne and Wear area... 'scraps'??? And they say that the deep fried Mars-Bar (something I've never actually seen in any Scottish chippie) is unhealthy!?

Seeing as we are diversifying geographically, what about a "pea wet"?

A mate of mine fae Wishaw (wishee) lives on munch boxes. He described them to me the other day. If that's what the West has to offer I'm alright thanks. What is with Toast & Beans too.
