306 hdi brake problem

well started the other day towing a trailer after about 100 mile light for handbrake on came on.

After checkin brake fluid level and pulling handbrake on and off it stayed on

The next day when going to drive the light wasnt on at first but appeared after 10-20 mins driving.. brakes seem fine not pulling and have 8-9 mm of pad left all round.

Has been coming on and off like that for a few days now.

Any suggestions welcome

Mac

bad earth or loose wire on hand brake switch would be my guess.

The brake warning light isn't shared with the ABS ?

ive got a 306 Hdi sound just like dodgy switch making, could be something silly like have you kept a pen or pennys in the tray where the hand brake is which may have slipped down the back so the handbrake wont go right down? check that then switch.

by the way what do you tow, small trailer or car? as ive been looking at a car trailer as Hdi ment to have a max tow weight of 1350kg

I know its a 306 your refering two, but 406 did suffer from handbrake switch playing up.

See that little squigly line with a dot under it after ABS. That means it's a question.

Handbrake switch would be my first check, followed by a check on the contacts/switch in the fluid resevoir.

SWMBOs 306 HDI has just decided the rear wash/wipe doesn't want to work which I'm betting will be a bad connection somewhere.

I still rate the 306 as a very good car all round, but French electrics leave a little to be desired.

there is a relay behind the plastic cover in the boot lid just below the rear wiper arm prone to water ingress though the wiper spigot seal which corrodes contacts,

Spot on! I'll start my investigation there then

The handbrake switch got stuck on my 306 (phase 1 Cabrio). Bit of WD sorted it.

And I agree with whoever said the 306 was a good car. The mid-90's Pugs certainly had the styling sorted out (they've gone wierd now tho) and the 306 Cabriolet and 406 coupe especially look great with a few subtle tweaks. Just a shame about the build quality, and as has been pointed out, the electrics. The hard top 306's handle well too if they're not too tired.
