Had a bad week
Had a fire at home wednesday..
I was at work an about 23.30 got a phone call from a neighbour saying your house is on fire come home...
Had the longest 1 hour journey home you can ever imagine.
Anyway long story short...
smoke alarms did their job
luckily stepson was awake and managed to wake his mum, fire brigade did a really good job.
Fire was contained mainly to the living room but everyroom smoke/water damaged.. looks like a horror film
Anyway purpose of this post is to thank the friends who have rallied round to help me...
and to ask everyone else to fit/check thier smoke alarms
without them i would probably be planning funerals instead of trying to sort insurance

Smoke and water damage is exactly and just that - everything you put into place (inc paying taxes for fire service etc) did it's job as it
should and you still have a family which is all that matters in life!!!
Best regards,
and if there's anything that I (we) can do, then shout up on here, I'll certainly try to help if I can...

What a nightmare, but at least your family is safe and insurance should sort the house.
Do you know what caused the fire, faulty appliance etc?

Glad you are all safe and well, terrible shock for all of you. Sorry to be practical, but they say, don't rush your fire insurance claim as
many recall lost items later on after the shock has subsided.

The only reason for this post was so you "know" someone it has happened too....
I was one of the "it will never happen to me"
luckily we did have smoke detectors but no fire extinguishers....
I couldnt believe that atleast 3 out of the 10 families in my street did not have contents insurance...
but they did have the next day!!

Just been thinking...
A mate of mine said he took a video of each room in his house and made a running comentary as well, describing all the stuff in each room. He keeps
the tape at his mothers, ie not on site. So that in the event of a fire or major theft he as a good record.
I recont this is also worth doing for the workshops, as I bet most of us have a good array of tools and it would also give you evidence of ownership
for an insurance claim.
Just a thought.

......and it is still 'stickied' in this section...
Gav, so very glad your family are safe and well.
When I saw your pictures, it brought back that smell from when our work-shop (business) went up in 2008 .... totally devastating for you and the
family, my heart goes out to you.
I kept my mind off 'what might have been', by starting to make lists of what was damaged/totalled, and taking photos of the damaged stuff
for the insurers.
My only advice to you is, try and not 'dwell', you are all ok, the house can be fixed/righted, and furniture can be replaced....
The way is forward....
