S Type Jags

Looking at second cars, 9-12years old, I was suprised to see that S type Jags are now resonable cheap. As anyone got any views/experience on buying one, ie are they expensive to run and maintain, unreliable or prone to fall apart. All experiences and friends tales welcome.

Bought one back in the spring. As said they are very cheap. Love it to bit's (I got the V8 one ). Big and lazy for long motorway trips, but still fun in the twisties.

but....

They are a total money pit (hence the much cheapness). Only get one if you have deap pockets. Guess why I'm taking the train to work at the moment!
However, I'm told the 3ltr V6 with the manual box is the better one to go for for reliability - you also get a good donor car when it comes to the end of it's life

To be honest, because it's a RWD with a v8 sound track, I'm happy to forgive it for it's hicups.

The 3.0 V6 is as said the one to go for in terms of reliability. The 4.0 V8 is the same engine as the XK8 and XJ8 but are more expensive. The post 2002 ones also have a much nice interior (much less ford like).

My youngest has an XJ Sport automatic and he loves it. Leather interior, electric everything and cruise control.
He sits there like Lord Muck and just aims it.
He got it in immaculate condition for, wait for it................£50!
The guy he bought it of was complaining that the scrappy was only going to give him £50 for it, so my lad jokingly said "I will give you that and you don't have to take it to the scrappy and pay for a taxi home."
The guy said "Done"
Doesn't it make you want to spit!

On top of that, he's just bought a 52inch telly for 250 quid.





Tell them about the bent treacle edges!

Guy at work had the 3l manual version on a Y plate. It would return 30mpg on a run but had it's fair share of problems. Main issues were the front bushes go...apparently 'they all do that' but it is about a grand to change them! It used to crash and bang over any bumps in the road.
The other problem he had was around the coil packs?
However, it was a decent cruiser until he stuck it into a field causing it to be written off!

Exactly what a Jaaaag owner wants. You don't think I can be bothered with changing gear, or turning on the lights, wipers etc myself do you

That's what mine's in for at the moment, along with it needing the cam cover gaskets replacing.
Other things I've had go wrong are corroded a/c pipes (apparently an easier job to replace on the V6 than the V8) and faulty abs sensors.

I've got a 2.7 diesel, it's great! 35 per gal, good performance too. I've done 24k miles in the last 10 months and it's never let me down, apart from the reversing sensors which I'll fix when I can be a***d

I've just bought an XJR


Only had it for a couple of weeks so cant really comment on Jag reliability but man its quick.

If you just keep in mind the they are all 100% reliable in the depreciation stakes

the v6 is basiclly an st220 mondeo engine, but puts out 241bhp, mate of mine has just bought a supercharged one and he loves it.

my mate had one in for a rear wheel bearing, the local motorfactors wanted £90+, got a genuine bearing from jaguar for £39!!!!!!
