Suppliers who don't know their products
Having decided to upgrade my tyres, wheels and brakes I need to know the internal diameter of suitable wheels. Fairly standard thing to ask wheel
suppliers you would think - after all no point in buying the blessed things if they won't fit.
You would think I had grown two heads and jumped through the phone line when I asked. I even made up a drawing, in paint so they could open it ( our
computers do not support CAD sir - readers are free on the net for goodness sake!!), to make it easy.
The excuses for not answering were, 1. Our wheels will not accomodate that - well what internal diameter will they accomodate? Silence. 2. Our
supplier says our wheels are tapered and the answer is not simple - Thats why I gave you a drawing what is the diameter of your wheel at the closest
point clearly marked at 10mm offset please? Still waiting reply. 3. Compomotive sent back a CAD drawing of their wheels. Full marks to Compo but I
want a lightweight wheel not a rally wheel.
So I am going to have to buy wheels and turn down the rotors and caliper mountings to fit.
Professional? I think not.
The same people will moan that business is hard in the downturn but will not make the effort to understand the products they sell and give the
customer enough confidence to buy from them.
Fume, rant.
13x10" with 38mm offset anyone any recommendations for a lightweight wheel>

hmm, hardly fair methinks. suppliers sell wheels, they are not mechanical engineers.
mention offset or pcd and if the numbers are not in the brochure, then they are stumped.

You could try Compomotive. They're able to tell you if their wheels will fit your car - you just need to fill in a few measurements on a diagram
they send you.
The CXR is a light wheel and available in 13x10"
Cheers,
Jek

I had no problems with my suppliers (didn't have to give them drawings though)
the guy asked me what car it was for?
I told him its a kitcar - at this point I normaly get a blank expression and the 'thats not on our list' response,
but this guy asked which kind ?
I told him its a dax rush
he says 'so you've go sierra hubs then' (I was shocked)
of course it wasn't that easy (never is on my build) as I've got granada hubs
anyway after going through some options he wanted to check some sizes (I didn't have to ask) so I gave him a hub that I had in my bag - he
looked shocked for about 5 seconds
then measured it up, told me they'd fit no problem and he'd give me a call when he'd asked the manufacturer about delivery dates
maybe I was lucky and got the one guy who knew his stuff, but based on that I've no problem recommending them:

I was buying tyres for mine last week and got told by a company in Cardiff (about a particular make) that I :
"don't want them, they are all grippy and stuff, they're for boy racers, they'll wear out quick"
So grippy tyres are a bad thing now because?.........

On a similar motorbike related rant:
Needed an obscure part for my 1986 CR500 mx'er so rang the Motocross 'specialists' and enquired:
"Yes sir, we'll have one of those in stock, come over."
After a 10 mile journey to the place I ask the same question and they go have a look.... "Oh, no sir we havn't got one of those,
you'll have to order it."
Ok, a little miffed but I order and pay for it, am told to wait 3 or so day for it to arrive.
A week later I ring up:
"Yes sir, your part is here" - so off I go again only to be told when I get there: "Sorry sir, we cant seem to find your part,
perhaps it hasn't arrived yet!! "
Holding my tongue I leave with the promise of it beeing here withing 3 days..again.
So, I wait 4 days to be sure and ring up and get: "Yes sir your part is here", and, having been here before I say ARE YOU SURE??? You said
that last week!! - "Yes sir, I'm looking at it right now, it's in a bag infront of me.."
The 3rd 10 mile trip (yesterday) to the shop is made and I state my business and get... "Sorry sir, we havn't got one of
those..".
But I just rang 20 mins ago and you said my order had arrived and you were LOOKING at the part..
"Sorry sir, that was probably Gary and he's gone home now, come back next week."
My reply was short but concise and I won't write it down but I't probably quite guessable... Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
