VW TDi sluggish acceleration - a reprise
Morning all,
continuing on from my thread last week, I've serviced the car - fresh oil, oil
filter, air filter and fuel filter - I've also replaced the MAF meter.
I thought it was sorted out this morning (only did the fuel filter last night), but by the time I was close to work, it's sticking again. Now
I've had a few hundred miles to learn how to drive it like this, this is what it's doing:
only using 25 - 50% throttle gives any acceleration - any more and it seems to bog down.
There's a flat spot from about 2400 - 2800 RPM, after this it picks up a bit.
I was wondering about the EGR valve - it's pretty oily on the outside, could it be getting stuck open and causing this kind of symptom? The
other possible causes I've thought of are: Throttle position sensor, fuel pump, or cam timing's gone off (don't think it'll be
the last one as it was better for 25 miles this morning).
Any other suggestions, or ideas on how to test for the above?

I just sorted out my Sluggish Volvo 850 (Reduced MPG was the indicator, and just not going as well as it did).
The Front Brake Caliper was sticking.
Dont forget get to check the non-engine items as well. ie are all the wheels truning freely when jacked up and off the road?
Just a thought.
Hope you sort it soon.

Thanks Geoff. If it was a sticky brake, I think I would have set fire to it doing a 200-odd mile round trip at the weekend
Pulling away is OK, so I'm pretty sure it's mixture / ECU related somehow... time will tell tho

Vnt vanes get stuck on some tdis. If they stick closed you get overboost, restricted breathing and limp mode. Do a search on tdiclub.com

I'm sure you'd have spotted this but a few people here had trouble with one of the boost hoses popping off on VAG TDIs.

Had that last time - went over all the connections I could find while over / under the car and couldn't find anything loose or
damaged-looking. Will have another check tho..

I've read on here (I think) that they sometimes split which is hard to spot as they close up when there's no boost.
Worth a check.

Hi Vinny,
EGR valve will cause this. Most manufacturers have the same problem.
Our Kangoo van does it regularly. I find that if you dip the cluch & rev
the engine it picks up ok. Slow up on the clutch & away it goes.
EGR due for another clean out soon

As suggested clean the EGR valve, carb cleaner does the trick.

Using the correct good quality fully synthetic oil and regular oil changes greatly reduces EGR related problems and will help avoid expensive turbo
issues.
