KISSING a passenger....madcap motorists
We all have done something crazy at one time
We have got the passenger to steer and my parents used to swap drivers on the long road trips back from Mozambique whilst towing a 29 foot ski
boat....without stopping
KISSING a passenger, watching TV on the dashboard, and taking photographs were just some of the stupid things madcap motorists have been caught doing
behind the wheel.
Police revealed a list of offenses committed while driving in the past year on the roads of North Wales.
They include two drivers spotted writing notes as they drove, five motorists caught with dogs on their laps and one person with a child on their knee
behind the wheel.
In other incidents two people were seen rolling up cigarettes and one driver was holding a 2.5metre piece of plastic cladding as he steered his
car.
A motorcyclist was also pulled over by police for performing a wheelie.
Each motoring offence saw the driver charged by North Wales Police with not being in proper control of a vehicle.
The most common offence was using a mobile, with more than 70 drivers caught negotiating roundabouts while chatting on their phone.
Drivers were either seen by an officer or caught on camera. They were hit with fines and/or penalty points.
The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) warned any distractions to drivers while they are behind the wheel is dangerous.
Dave Collings, VOSA area manager for Wales, said: “With the advance of modern technology there are now numerous things that can distract drivers from
the road, from sat-navs to mobile phones to MP3s linked to radio systems.
“Anything that distracts the driver’s attention from the road, even for a split second is potentially dangerous. It is vital drivers keep
concentration on the road for their sake and others’.”
In recent years North Wales has seen some driving shockers.
Dutch lorry driver Martin Veens was jailed for eight weeks for eating spaghetti from a saucepan while driving through North Wales in 2007. He was
using his knees to steer along the A55.
Donna Maddock, 22, from Mold, was fined £200 after she was caught on camera putting on her make-up while doing 32mph. She was holding an eyeliner
with one hand and a compact in the other while driving near Pwllheli.
Last year a German trucker was pulled over by VOSA officers on the A55. Police and vehicle inspectors were stunned to find the lorry driver watching
a German language war film on a TV screen mounted on his dash when he was hauled over at Ewloe, Flintshire in January.
Mr Collings added: “Lorry drivers who have to drive for long periods often look for ways to relieve the boredom and in this case the driver was
watching a DVD.”
The last 12 months saw one person charged with ‘not being in a position to have a proper view ahead’ after being caught watching a TV set on their
dashboard.

I nearly got wiped out by a lorry driver with a newspaper spread out over his steering wheel failing to go round a bend as he didn't look which
way the road went. If there hadn't been a bank for me to swerve up he would have been scraping me off the bumper.
yours, Pete
I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Been there. I have done a couple my self. Who hasn't.
But I have done 98K miles in the last 3 years and the only accident i had was when someone run on the back of me so not my fault.
If it's going to happen, it will happen.

The next thing is they will have you for looking down to check your speedometer - or maybe they should be had for expecting you to keep an eye on
your speed - reading instruments as a source of taking your concentration from the road is no better than many of those other offences they fined
people for - and of course looking out for and reading road signs is another source of distraction.
And then of course there are those dangerous drivers who check out the side roads to make sure that no one is possibly running a stop street or red
robot. Fine them all I say - they are recklessly endangering other road users by taking their eyes off the road again - and then there's
blinking what can be worse than driving with your eyes shut - you shouldn't get a licence until you learn to blink one eye at a time.
I bet the guy performing the wheelie had his eyes firmly on the road and open at the time.

You can't. It's against at least one of the (far too) many laws we have in this "free" country
