In Car Entertainment advice please

As a yoof I fiddled around with big speakers and the odd amp in the back of my first car - back then it was all cassettes and simples though.

Having since had company cars for a number of years I've not really paid much attention other than can I plays CDs, listen to radio 4 and more recently connect my phone.

Now SWMBO wants the radio/cassette player in her car updated with something that plays radio, CDs and has an ipod connection. Looking around I've seen a couple of head units that have USB connections and SD card slots.

The USB memory stick or SD card idea I like as you could have loads of music, control it via the stereo and avoid having the ipod stuck on the dash (she'll leave it there and someone will nick it).

Can anyone recommend anything around £100?

Any good/bad points to USB/SD set-ups?

Cheers
Nick

For the head units, i'd highly recommend any of the clarion range.

2nd for clarion. Seem to remember they had something for £100ish which had SD card reader for mp3, took dvds as well as cds (which you can fill with lots of mp3s) and also had bluetooth for hands free phone calls.

Top tip- you shouldn't really pay more than 50% of list price for a head unit imho.

dont get a kenwood. got one for my other half it crashes and buggars about all the time. we sent it back for a warranty repair, they said it had nothing wrong with it and charged us £60 before they would return it.
got it back and it still didnt work. ended up geting trading standards in, still waiting for a result, gave up with the kenwood, and got her a pioneer that is spot on.

IMHO I would get an Alpine with full iPod control (I've got one in each of our cars and they are excellent), the iPod sits in the glove box so is out of the way, and you get total control of it via the head unit. A lot of basic MP3 type head unit don't have good functionality for searching for tracks, or playing on shuffle.

No need for CDs ever again....

I have a Ministry of Sound from Argos, it does MP3's, SD card slot and USB. It is ideal for the 7 as I have the audio outputs connected to a pocket guitar amp which then lets me listen to it through ear phones as I drive around, one ear of course. No speakers so the setup is ideal.

My recommendation......

Go for a unit that has an auxillary input. When I bought my golf GTI a couple years ago I had the choice of the integrated iPod dock or an auxillary input. Out of naivity I chose the iPod dock. Now I have an iPhone and WOULD be able to listen to streaming audio from slacker radio or pandora but the phone doesn't fit in the cradle.

The aux inputs are really flexible which is what I like.

I've also owned several clarion head units and they have been VERY good for me. MP3 capability is also a must have.... fwiw

Yeah aux input, I have one in mine and it means I can use my Sony phone instead of having to get a pIepod to do the same thing

be aware that there are a lot of stereo's compatible with the ipod but the iphone is a different matter and not necessarily the case Wifey has a JVC which fully controls her ipod via the car controls. It also has aux in and usb.

I would also like a sub £100 CD head unit that has DAB, aux input, remote HDD with USB for uploading, bluetooth, 4x50watt, sub out on the back, must play wma, mp2.3.4 and have video out.

If I can find one with a screen it needs dvd and sd card for tomtom sat nav.

Am I close?

I might be able to find you one, although it'll be used... And a bit scratched, and rather warm (some may say hot?)

No DAB! Its crazy peeps still buying AM/FM sets when in 4 years time the transmitters will be turned off! This goes for car OEMS as well mind, think the only one clued up atm is VW.

Was looking at the ones with pop out screens in Halfords and shook my head at £500 when the things are going to be obsolete soon!

Well current government timing is for analogue AM & FM transmitters to be turned off 2015... it may change with the change of government.. BUT...

All the analogue TV transmitters go by 2012 so seeing as they can get more channels on the same bandwidth with digital...

And, I've just took the tape deck out of my new truck tonight! Its no longer 1980 in the car now (real radio)
