BMW steering lock

Sorry it's not locost

A friend of mine is having some trouble with the steering lock on his BMW 1 series. It occasionally does not switch off and the dash usefully tells him that there is a problem with it. lol

Anyone had this problem or know anything about it?

Thanks again

Rupert

Interesting. Looks like he's not the first to experience the problem...

its a common fault. if he goes to a bmw specialist. NOT a dealer cos they charge tons then you can get an update to stop it. its around £30 ish to get update.

i pressume the fault light is in yellow not red?

Just spoke to him again and it is sometimes yellow sometimes red... Does red mean new mechanism??

Unfortunately it is at a main dealer now being 'diagnosed'

Personally I'd take it to a main dealer and tell them it's a POS and they have to mend it ASAP as it's not fit for purpose and try it on that way! If all it needs is a software upgrade then that's an admission that the software doesn't work IE not fit for purpose. QED.

from the large experience ive had with main dealers after its past the warranty then its a pain for them to fix anything even if its proved to be a common fault.

good luck to him getting it fixed.

the yellow is a common fault the red not so much.

good luck i know they charge a bundle.

525D 2005 150,000 miles later i found out the hard way.

Thanks for the help

At least if they try and charge him a massive diagnostic fee he can say that it is a common fault and that is should not take long to diagnose a common fault ..... lets hope they are reasonable!
