Seven - 1st start

At long last I have got round to starting my Austin Seven Special.
(only 2 days 'till its 1st hillclimb......)
The car is based on a 1937 chassis but has been fitted with a Reliant 848cc OHV engine and 4 speed gearbox (Robin/Kitten).
Body is a 1950's Hamblin Cadet MkII.
Initially there was a lot of churning with 'no-go'.
Turns out that some helpful person marked the petrol pump input and output pipes with arrows going the wrong way
Second attempt, the engine tries to catch but not quite there.
Third attempt - success
The SU carb jet holder had been screwed all the way up so no fuel getting into the engine.

My next problem is to get the water flowing through the radiator
The heater/carb heater circuit was circulating but the water was not flowing through the radiator. I better check out the thermostat and check for airlocks in the radiator.

That's where a spot of fuel straight down the inlet helps things along a bit

Checked the thermostat this morning - it appears to open when put it in boiling water.
Probably was an airlock.
I have removed the thermostat anyway - as the car has no fan and heats up pretty quickly.
The engine only needs to run for about a minute at a time at the hillclimbs.

Drove the car for the first time today - first impression - NO BRAKES!!!!

After a bit of adjustment to the balance bar and adjusting the rear shoes I now have brakes capable of locking the fronts.

The Seven has had a hydraulic brake conversion at the front and the rears now use a clutch slave cylinder pushing the cross shaft which in turn pulls on the rear cables.

Next problem was getting my feet onto the pedals - the cockpit is tiny.
I kept banging my knees on the steering wheel so I had to add a 4 inch extension to the column.

For the rest of the day I will tidy up the wiring (it was lashed together in the dark).
Then I need to start panelling the transmission tunnel and bulkheads.

That leaves Friday to make a timing strut, fit the race numbers, fit the rollover bar and seatbelts and try and get it to fit on my trailer (the trailer bed is too wide and the little Seven will fit between the rails).
