Vauxhall 20xe re-build costs

What should you budget for a typical rebuild on a running but tired 2 litre redtop engine?

What in particular would be worth upgrading if future power increases were to be made? I'd be thinking throttle bodies, cams, pistons/rods, dry sump, engine management etc something in the region of a shade over 200bhp.

My engine budget would lie between £2k and £2.5k. Where would this get me?

Thanks,
Oli

make sure you change the oil pump drive and pressure releif spring. This is the main issue with the engines. Next remove the cam belt adjuster, use a fixed wheel and take up the slack with the water pump.
Think well before you changes cams as a lot of people i spoke to wished they had not as they lost the bottom end power. I got 190bhp out of a standard engine on carbs and mbe ignition.
It ran as sweet as for 5 years only changed spark plugs and gave it death all the time.

Be aware it can get expensive pretty quickly

It really depends on just how tired the donor engine is
Do a budget and use Autovaux for the standard parts and SBD or similar for the more specialised bits

*If* its got the dreaded plastic cam belt pulleys they are the first thing to bin

Oil pressure releif valves can cause problems aswell

mine runs alot of SBD parts including their TB's, cams, dry sump & exhaust system etc
So if you need any more details just ask

Yeah it's quite tempting to spend a load on SBD or QED parts! My overall car budget is 9 grand. I'm looking to get an ex academy Caterham and convert it over time to redtop power or get a more or less ready sorted Westfield but I've always fancied building an engine myself.

I've got a feeling the standard rods and pistons should be up to 200hp, but you will want to change the rod bolts.

Dry sump isn't going to be do-able within budget unless you made the throttles and engine management cheap (i.e. bike TB's and Megasquirt). Again, dry sumping wouldn't be near the top of the list of things that need doing, I'd go for a shallow wet sump with some decent baffles and see how you go to start with.
