OT - Ford 1.8 TDCI camshaft pulley
Hugely off topic i know but i thought id post in the fountain of knowledge that is locostbuilders.
I have a transit connect 1.8 diesel in the workshop with a cambelt failure. In order to get the head off, the camshaft pulley needs to be removed from
the camshaft which i have (eventually) done only to find there is no woodruff key!
Does anyone have any idea how to get the pulley back on in the right place if the pistone are fine and i only need to rebuild the head? (if the
pistons are screwed, we are going for a new engine)
Also while i am on the subject, what are the chances the pistons are fine? It wasnt turned over very much at all when it went, only by the RAC guy who
wanted to be sure it was cambelt.
How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

it,s a taper fit on the cam,you lock the cam and crank pulleys (no mechanical pump i presume) and fit the belt then tighten the cam bolt up.
you have more chance of winning the lottery than avoiding valve damage,the old escort engine on which this is based used to do all 8 valves and break
cams and cam bearing caps,be prepared for a BIG bill.

You need the locking pin kit to hold the crank and cams in the correct relative positions.
Doesn't really matter how many times the engine was turned over to be honest, one revolution of the crank would be enough to bend the valves -
and this is almost a certainty on a diesel I'm afraid.

i have a 5000 miler sitting outside at the mo,all you have to do is steal it and wedge some folding through my letter box

Im not bothered about the valve (i quite enjoy that part strange as it sounds ), i was told it is likely the pistons are damaged.
How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

there is a slot in the other end of the cam,its off set on and a bar will only fit in one way.the crank has a timing pin that goes in the block just
below the altenator and above the a/c compressor if it has one,just remove the 10mm blanking bolt and screw in the pin (turn the crank till you hear
the donk of crank hitting pin .direction of rotation only or you will snap the pin off).make sure you are in the right area for the pin to butt up
against the crank ie tdc .
pistons will prob be ok .

As said there is a slot on the rear of the camshaft to put a locking bar in. Then theres a pin goes in the front of the crank case behind the
alternater to lock the crankshaft at tdc. When u fit the belt leave the cam pulley loose and tighten it after you done the tensioner up. Is it full
cambet or half chain? The pistons will be fine. Id sling a belt on it first and se if it starts. Iv done a couple that have been fine.
