Hi new on here and Zetec install

Hello! everyone on here. I have a 1981 Marlin roadster that has a tired 2.0 litre pinto engine and cortina four speed box, The cam needs replacing and it has just blown the head gasket today.
I have been looking around for a pinto engine for some time now but have not managed to find one local.
My uncle has a engine and box he took out of his 1995 ford mondeo 1.8 LX. he put it in the back shed and left it there for 6 years, i just went around there and i can take the engine for free, He did take the ecu off the car when he scraped it but we looked every where for it and i fear it may have been thrown out by one of the family.
My question is this will the engine i describe fit in where the 2.0 pinto lives at the moment, and what will i need in the form of ecus factory wiring etc off another mondeo to get it working in my marlin. Is this install worth doing or have i just too much to find to get it running? Will it work out better to just buy a old mondeo and that way i get the engine and its ecu all in one.
Will other second hand ecus work on this car or are they dedicated to just the car they come on and need recoding for the car to recognize them, i have a peugeot 307 that needed a new ecu and it was not just a case of plugging it in, are fords of this age the same.
Finally my pinto has twin 40 DCOE webers fitted and they are good, can i get a manifold and use these on the 1.8LX or is this a retro step. Any hints on wiring it in to run would be usefull, i can follow a diagram and solder make good connections etc. But working anything out ecu like is not in my remit sorry.

Hello and Welcome, For starters if you are wanting to use the twin 40's you'd not want the mondeo ecu anyway. So it doesnt matter about not finding it.

You'd want an aftermarket ecu that would run the ignition side on things.... theres loads to choose from.

I'd be wanting to give that 1.8 engine a good checkover first before taking out the old one. 6 years is a long time to be sat in a shed.

Whereabouts are you, as people will be nearby that could help you with either the pinto or the zetec.

As above - not worth trying to stay with the Ford ECU. Bike carbs and megajolt are the future - loads of info if you search here and google. You'll probably also want to consider a type 9 5spd gearbox although your 4spd will bolt to the engine (and save propshaft mods).

Does the engine turn over ok? I wouldnt spend any money on it before at least making sure it runs as zetec's are pretty cheap these days. Why not get a running 2.0L (worth 10bhp+ depending on the cams in the 1.8) from a breakers and then using the lighter flywheel etc from the 1.8 you get given??

Even being free, it will cost you to get it in the marlin. It has the wrong sump, wrong flywheel and is the least desirable 1.8 zetec. (if a 1.8 would ever be desirable)

And not to forget, the zetec has the inlet and exhaust switched over compared to your pinto. So if you want to do it cheap, find another pinto. If you want to upgrade do it with another engine. At least with the 1.8 escort zetec (preferably the 130ps version)

As above, give it a good check before taking it. 2 litre Zetecs aren't expensive to buy anyway, it the rest of the stuff that pushes the cost up, ECU, decent exhaust manifold etc. and you'll have those costs anyway.

As you have the carbs already i'd say the cheapest way would be to get a ford ECS to run the sparks and buy a manifold for the webers. There are still lots of other things to sort out, and ECS isn't the best way in terms of performance but it is dead easy to do and very cheap.

Im Running a zetec with 2 litre cams adnalso ran it n webbers it was faster than a mildly tuned pinto on bike carbs. The 1.8 zetec is used in formula 4 as well so not too bad an engine to use

Thanks for the advice, i have decided to go with a pinto, and that way i can stay in class 3f for hillclimbing and i can still trial it in actc events, if i go zetec i am alienating myself from that side.
It will be a 1.6 pinto and try and get it as close to 1700ccs as i can and a play with the head and a cam of some kind..
