MOT Fail - Micra CV Gaiter

Just got back from the MOT centre.

Failed on one of the numberplate bulbs being out, and offside outer CV joint gaiter split. Got the outer boot kit from a factors along with the bulbs.

Unfortunately I don't have a Haynes for the Micra (K11), but worked on plenty of other cars.

Does anybody know if there are any specific points to changing the boot on a Micra (in particular, how the inner joint comes off the driveshaft and whether I need to split the wishbone balljoint or if it's enough to just unbolt the strut and tip the hub outwards to take the driveshaft off)?

Not quite what I was hoping to do this weekend.

Cheers

I've used the split boot kits with great success. If that's what you've got make sure you keep the grease away from the new boot until the glue has set!
I have done Micra CV boots in the past and can't remember it being difficult. Just don't pull the shaft out of the gearbox without something to catch the oil......

Yup, I've done this myself on a K11.
Be careful that the inner CVJ doesn't come out of the g/box when you're doing it otherwise the oil pisses everywhere and you have to fill up the g/box again which is easier said than done.

First time round I used a sticky boot type bodge. A few months later I got to do it again properly...

Fit a QH stretch boot using a fitting cone ---- much easier way to do it. NB get a Quinto Hazel part not a knock off part.

Streer well clear of split boots --- only a short term bodge.

I did this last year and forgot to fit one of the circlips, was fine for about 500 miles then one day when I was turning onto a road the driveshaft fell out of the hub and on to the road I was only 20 meters from home.

The mental gymnastics a landlord will employ to justify immoral actions is clinically fascinating. Just because something is legal doesn't make it moral.

Made me chuckle (not in a bad way BT...). The first time I used one was for a quick fix to get an MOT. It was still there and holding tight five years later when I fitted a proper one to the other side. I wished I'd bought another split type!
