ABS Fault on Peugeot!!

Just thought I'd post a little about my wife's Peugeot 307's ABS fault.

She came home thursday complaining that various symbols were lit on her dashboard telling her to STOP and their was an "ABS Fault" I took it for a drive and sure enough, telling me the same thing with a curious knocking noise when ever I braked, almost as if the ABS was kicking in. Now 18 months ago there was a recall on the car for water ingress into the ABS ECU, checked by local Peugeot dealership, and given the all clear. (also flagged a leaking radiator which they could replace for her in exchange for 1 arm and 1 leg. Strange how the car hasn't lost any water - ever!)

Anyway, a quick google search found the usual horror stories of people spending vast sums of money on new bushings, roll bars, discs and pads, ABS ECU's etc, but all reporting the fault remained. (all done by Peugeot dealerships!!) Reading the forums, occasionally the same solution cropped up. So in the freezing temperatures last night, I set about testing them.
Basically, raise the back of the car, wheels off, calipers off, discs off. Easy if you say it quick. The ABS sesor is bolted to the hub carrier and sits about half a milimeter off the hub. In the case of the faulty systems, it's now about 3mm off. The movement is caused by corrosion behind the sensor, pushing it away on one side, creating a bigger gap on the other. Easy fix! Remove sensor, clear corrosion, bolt sensor back in place! In my case I used half a washer on one side to push it nearer. Jobs a good 'un! I actually only did the nearside in the end, as that was suffering more corrosion and the gap looked reasonable offside.

Took it out for a drive last night and this morning and the fault has gone!

Thats a good result, as with the current weather a dodgy ABS is not what you want!

Locost fixing at it's best a price of a washer! Well done that man, imagine the. Bill from the stealers if you just left it with them!

Another common ABS mechanical that is easily fixed is a split reluctor ring you can now buy replacement rings serparately from CV joints

That's common and should be the 1st on the list to check at a Peugeot dealer ie that's one of the items I checked
I no longer work for Peugeot but work for Nissan there are too many crap techs working in Peugeot dealers
I was never allowed to just do the repair to clear the corrosion always had to knock the abs sensor

Could have just taken the bulbs out of the Dash or the fuses that work them.

if you clean all the corroded metal and you have to do it with a chiesel then you do not have to fit a washer to make it work if you fit a washer then its not cleaned up enough






reference previous post from morcus if you remove the bulbs/leds then the fault will still be there ie no abs brakes just no light on not really the answer

Correct! It was -4, even under 800W of halogen lighting, so I didn't want to spend all night on it. I didn't have the tools to remove the dust shield so space was limited. I am in this for an easy life. If fitting half a thin washer securely behind the sensor achieves the same result, then I'm off inside for a well deserved brew!! Obviously if I were paying a garage to do the job, I would expect a mirror finish before the sensor is refitted, but in reality, they'd probably use a washer as well!!
