Scenic e-bay punt pays off.
Last Feb I bought a Scenic 4x4, unseen off e-bay. Partly due to the weather and partly because it'd be a better tow car. Trouble was I
couldn't get on with it as a day to day car; Too slow and cumbersom. So seeing as the works van was getting a bit long in the tooth we took 2 of
the rear seats out, boxed it out and used it instead of the van.
now it's paying for itself. It's brilliant in the snow! Last night I went home in it and to the local country park to walk the dog. Never
put a wheel out of place even on the 1:6 hill to the park, where all the residents with "proper 4x4's" couldn't get up; It
just weaved through the chaos!

I like cars which don't scream out their 4WD capabilities.
Therefore, I quite like the Scenic RX4.

No V6s mind, a slugger of a diesel for this weather.

When you get underneath you can see Renault have done a proper job on it, rather than just bodge it up. Only thing to remember is to keep your foot in
if it understeers so the viscous diff puts power to the rear. Was fun yesterday morning powersliding it around Aldi car park next door to work!

I might get one.
Just enough 4wd capability to be usefull and no more.
I had a Passat 4motion before and that was a nice thing.
Zero additional ground clearance though, so loses out a little in that respect.
Just off to google RX4 prices.

hows that little project going ?
I was just thinking yesterday that a sierra 4x4 might be the answer (a ghia estate rather than an XR or cossie)
or maybe even a panda 4x4

A few years ago TopGear tested an RX4 aginst a Freelander and a Volvo XC70. Raced them accross a wet field, towing caravans. RX4 got to the finish as
the Freelander got halfway and the Volvo was still at the start line.
5thGear did a race between a Panda4x4 and a RangeRover out of a quarry. Ended in a virtal dead heat.

My mates have coined the phrase 'quattro smug' for me. The Audi loves this weather
Interested in the 4x4 P100 though. I assume the plan is just to transplant the engine, box, front diff, hubs, etc from an XR4x4. But what are you
doing at the back? P100's have solid axles and leaf springs, don't they?

And my Snowmobile Bongo has beds, a little stove, beds TV etc so if I do get stuck behind any of these 'soft-roaders' then we can pull up,
get our PJs on and have a brew.....

keep you eye on the viscous, they get tight just like freelander 1's (same design), we have had 2 come in wiuth smashed rear diffs because of
it, cost a fortune to put right!!!!

Nice to see there are some out there that are more than just a styling exercise. There are a few cars that have been treated to the 'lets stick
grey plastic over the arches to make it look more rugged' look. Most of which have no 'capablilty' off road so they tend to get
tarred with the same brush. Nice to see the french are trying more than just stick on trim.
Love the 'quattro smug' phrase, I remember many years ago when at the Lombard RAC in wales, I was only about 7 or 8 and my dad had an 85
coupe quattro and we left all cars including some supposed 'off roaders' stuck in a snowy, muddy field (i mean car park) after switching
the diff locks on and just easing our way through the abandoned 'norms'.
