VW 2.5tdi - oil in intercooler?
Evening all,
I've just been doing a bit of tinkering with my VW T4 transporter, mainly blaniking off the EGR pipe into the manifold to see if it makes any
difference. Whilst I had the intercooler off, I noticed that there was a slight amount of oil coating the inside of the pipes feeding air to it, and
from it to the manifold. It is a 2.5tdi engine (ACV engine if that is any help).
Is it normal for a small amount of oil to find its way through the intercooler? I am presuming it has orginated from the turbocharger?
Cheers
Andy

Sounds like the turbo oil seals are on their way out. There should be no oil in there as it ends up in the combustion gases and effects the running of
the engine, you'll know when the seals have gone alltogether as you wont be able to switch the engine off, it will run on that engine oil.

Landrover used to run on the engine oil til they blew up if you weren't quick enough to stall it!I have no experience with that engine but I
wouldn't worry too much, just keep an eye on it.I've never had a car without a trace of oil in the pipes!a little oil makes a big
mess.you'll see serious smoke before the turbo seals are a real problem.

most modern diesels have oil traces in intercooler pipework. nothing to worry about, but worth cleaning out occasionally if you feel like it.

Never seen a totally oil free intercooler yet.

Yeah all diesels wil have trace amounts of oil in the pipes and cooler, if too excessive though it may run up.

Have to agrre , some oil in the hoses /intercooler is normal. Does the engine use a lot of oil?

Hi Folks,
The engine oil was changed about 600 miles ago (about a year ago) and it was topped up so it was just on the upper limit of the dipostick. I've
just checked the oil level now, and it is impossible to detect any loss at all. The amount of oil in the intercooler/pipes was not much, not enough
to drip out, but a noticeable coating in ther neverless..

I'd get it checked out definitely - my 306 turbodiesel ran on it's engine oil to 8k RPM and blew up before I could stall it - it too had
an "acceptable" oil coating on the intercooler, or so I thought. After the incident, the entire car and a stretch of belgian motorway also
had an "acceptable" oil coating.
Make sure your turbo is in okay condition (clean out the intercooler, drive the car around and see how fast it oils up again)
Also make sure you're not overfilling your oil
