to reduce parasitic losses from the alternator. Some alternators can consume 3-4bhp, but when effectively run through the gearbox and run from the diff input or one of the output flanges, the losses are much smaller due to the gearing reduction. Only charges when the cars moving of course, but on a racer they are often fired up on a slave battery as they have a tint race battery on baord to save weight and space. Pretty common on sports race cars.
also helps to move a heavy lump to the rear which is always useful on a front engined car

It doesn't need to run at high engine speeds and more rearward weight doesn't hurt either...

edit...oops bit late on that..

They have converted it from sprung to unsprung weight though. Then again, an Atlas axle weighs as much as a small battleship so won't make a lot of difference.

Looking at the spaceframe, I have to wonder if they've actually saved any weight over a standard shell with a cage!

Ditto - that is very very cool. You can almost picture the onlookers when you pull into the paddock on race day, flip the front and wheel out your race car

Not so much fun if the hydraulics fail when car halfway out - but guess they have a mechanical lock/ratchet.
