Landrover Issues

I've finally got our Discovery running again after a rather loooong mission to fix it! I have a couple of questions for the knowledgeable on here.

Firstly, the engine starts straight away, and seems to run fine throughout the rev range, but I took it around the farm yard yesterday (no MOT yet) just to check the auto box was doing it's thing, and after I came to a stop and then moved off again, there was a decent amount of whitish smoke from the tail pipe. Not as much as when i first had the issue due to computer control problems, but too much none the less. After I parked up and let it tick over for a while I revved it and it seemed OK again. I suspect it may be that when I re-fitted the timing belt and set the injector pump it was slightly advanced/retarded as the set-up allows a few degrees of adjustment either way. If it was out by a tooth I think it would be more difficult to start and smoke all the time.

The other issue is that a couple of the tyres go down after a few days. I think the alloys may be leaking past the rim, i tried the washing up liquid test think that is the problem. Any one got any ideas what's best to sort it out or will they settle once they get used again? (it's been sat for a long time).

I am a member of a couple of 4x4 forums, but they seem to be as much help as none at all sometimes, they never give many replies if any to all but the most common of issues.

Any input gratefully received.

John

Was the smoke definately unburnt diesel, wasn't just condensation from water in the exhaust?

Take the tyres off and clean any corrosion of the bead sealing area on the rim and put them back on with a bit of bead sealer.

He might be right, best thing to do is get it mot'd and see what happens with the emissions test.

And be prepared to have the wheels totally resealed! Mine were porous and leaked through the alloy!

Not sure if it was unburnt diesel or water. definitely not as bad as the original fault I battled with for over a year!!

I did wonder after thinking about it if it could be s**t in the exhaust maybe as it's been sat for so long, or could be the sedimentor just after the fuel tank, might have been water in there sloshing around when I drove it?

Don't like the sound of the alloys leaking I'm hoping it's only the rims 'cos of the washing up liquid test I did on one of them.

Guess I need to check the sedimentor, then as suggested, take it to the MOT. I was told that changing the engine oil in a diesel could make a difference to the emissions test at MOT? Anyone heard that or a is it cobblers?

I assume its a Tdi from your description.

Injector pump timing is done by locking the pump body and lining up the slot in the flywheel. so I don't see how it can be 'a tooth out' as it would be impossible to time it properly if that were the case. Also if the timing were that far out it would not rev and be very sluggish.

White smoke is usually oil burning, rather than fuel which is grey/black.

Changing the oil can help emissions as crankcase fumes which include oil mist are recycled through the exhaust. Also just whip out the air cleaner before the test.

Sorry, must be oldtimer's again. Yes it is a 300tdi. As for the colour, that is one reason I gave up on the 4x4 forums, one minute white smoke is unburnt fuel, then it's water, then black smoke is overfuelling and then it's oil !! I never know what day it is

Thanks for the info on the oil change thing , and the tip about the filter.

I know about the timing thing as I did the belt myself as I had to change the pump. I must admit though, I haven't got the pin for the TDC setting so I used the marks on the pulley and casing so it is possible I may have intorduced some parallax error as I didn't remove the radiator so I had to look in from the top. I do however have a 9.5mm drill bit so at least I know the pump was locked in the correct position for TDC. I agree with the rough running though so am assuming if it is out it's only be a small amount which could be tweaked out by adjusting the pulley on the pump.

You will never get the timing anywhere near right using the pulley marks. The slot in the flywheel needs to line up with the hole in the bottom of the bell housing. There is a 'special tool' for the job but it is not really necessary, just poke any pin up the hole and get it engaged in the slot and roughly in the middle of the hole.

If you have had the injector pump off, is it possible that the pulley flange on the end of the pump shaft could have moved? It is only located on the shaft by a taper lock, there is no keyway or anything. I had that problem with one of my 300Tdi's and I never could get the timing right until I realised it. It needed to have the spill timing set up again by an injection specialist.

Good luck!
